The end of the 29
am I the only mourner?
Bring back the bend bus
it always had a bad press...well
there were a few little things
like the time I nearly got stabbed
by a 6 inch blade
wielded by a gang of kids
in Seven Sisters Rd.
I never sat at the back again.
It is mourned by the poor
those on benefits
known to them as
the Free Bus.
Why do I miss it then?
It was part of our local landscape
it was such a familiar sight
if you ran for the bus
you'd catch it at the back
just before the doors closed.
It was great for wheelchairs and prams
Yesterday I saw a young woman with a pram
get off the crowded double decker
because the ONE bay
was filled by another pram
and a man with a large suitcase -
this would never happen
with the bendy bus...
Today at the bus stop
looking up the road
I could not see which bus was the 29.
Now they all look the same.
Shame. I miss it
snaking down Green Lanes.

Are they running more double deckers to make up for the fact that they have less capacity than the bendies?
Given that a night out in Camden always seems to end with a 15min wait at 2am for a 29 bendy which is then far too busy to get on, I dread to think what it will be like with a double decker unless there will be more of them.
I always thought the bendies felt safer than the top deck of a double decker. Plenty more escape routes at least. I got trapped on the top deck of a 253 on Seven Sisters Road as some kids fought and stabbed each other at the top of the stairs.

@ElleCarumba - according to this site.. http://londonbuses.co.uk/routes/029.html the 29s last MA (Mercedes articulated) allocation was 29 vehicles on Monday to Saturday and 26 on Sundays.
According to this site.. http://www.londonbusroutes.net/details.htm the allocation has now risen to 42 vehicles.. TfL will no doubt have to cut other services to pay for the extra staff (13 extra buses x3 duties daily - approx 36 extra drivers) now needed to operate the 29. That's the price to pay for the Mayor pandering to illogical prejudices..
And we haven't even spoken about the increased emissions and the rise in pollution levels along the route..
For less than that, conductors could have been employed in the bendy buses to counter fraudulent travel - If that had really been the reason for withdrawing the vehicles..

Fingers crossed the higher number of buses will make up for it!
Won;t make boarding the bus any quicker however.

I didn't particularly like the bendy buses but they allow much faster loading from busy stops like Manor House, and also as mentioned are much more accessible for prams and suitcases, however to replace Bendies when they still have a lot of life in them seems a total waste of money particularly at the moment. We are paying a high price for Boris' vanity project.

I just walked past the bus stop by the mother of all welcomes Harringay Bridge and there were three 29s in row. you wait years for a double decker 29 then 3 come at once!

No, they won't go to Germany.. I can't see any Germans wanting walk into the middle of the road to get on them..
They'll end up in some former colony or perhaps even Scotland !

As a parent- they were great for push chairs.
As a cyclist I shall not miss the patch on the back telling you that "This bus is 18m/ 56ft [as you please]", and the inevitable "sh*t" as the driver arbitrarily pulls away as you are half way down the 18m length of the bus, throwing you into the neighbouring lane....

Did I suggest it did- the point- should i really need to make it- is that these mothers are that bit bigger then DDs, and thus present a greater hazard given the incremental effort required in navigating safely around them. But you knew that already really didn't you!
