Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Successful street lobby shows Spurs fans also support Tottenham the community

Thanks to those who came along to the Haringey Defend Council Housing's street lobby of Spurs fans at the 6th December home match against Crystal Palace, Several thousand leaflets were distributed to encourage fans to support the community in resisting the damage being caused by the stadium and property development, including the proposed walkway demolishing shops, homes, Coombes Croft library, and a medical centre.

A largely positive response from fans was expressed by Chesnut Estate resident and Spurs fan Vincent Gillespie, who said: "Being a Tottenham fan doesn't mean I agree with what the club is doing."

This street lobby builds on an Our Tottenham meeting (12th November 2014) with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust at which ten areas of common concern were agreed. Writing in the Haringey Independent the THST's Martin Cloake noted reported:

'Common themes emerge; lack of consultation, lack of trust, concern over whose interests are being served by various proposals. Most of all, there is uncertainty about what exactly is being proposed. Where once there was agreement and support across the board for a set of plans that seemed to deliver a better stadium that was a part of a vibrant community, now there is suspicion and fear. What a sad failure that represents.'

A number of these commons concerns were also discussed in a meeting between THST and club officials. including Daniel Levy. A key claim made by the club is that 'the High Road West regeneration (station and walkway) was a Haringey Council scheme and not aTHFC initiative'.

The club says it supports seven of the ten Our Tottenham charter points. So, there is much for the community to work with in also winning over the club. It really isn't over until the final whistle for those bulldozers sounds.
