Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

IF YOU DO NOT WANT
STROUD GREEN TO BE IN TOTTENHAM
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOW!!!!

The next general election seems a long way away, but when the time comes, many people are in for a big surprise. If you live in Stroud Green, you may find you are no longer part of Hornsey and Wood Green constituency, but Instead are part of Tottenham.

So why are we talking about it right now?

Because now you can still do something about it, by responding to the Boundary Commission consultation, in 3 simple steps,  by the 5th of December 2011 (Links at the bottom)

But before you do, take a quick look at what is happening and what rules the Boundary Commission will follow when considering representations from the public.

Watch a short video explaining it

‘STROUD GREEN - WHERE WILL IT BE HORNSEY OR TOTTENHAM?’

https://www.youtube.com/GreenN8TV where we talked to Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green and Stroud Green Councillors Katherine Reece and Richard Wilson and discuss what would be the implications of such a change for local residents. We also asked people living in Stroud Green ward how they feel about the proposed change.

We also asked David Lammy MP for Tottenham, for his views and comments, but sadly have not heard back from him to this day. Is this a sign of things to come if the unthinkable happen?

For more info on how to respond to the consultation go to http://www.greenn8.org

Anyone interested in this topic

SGRA has organised a public meeting

Harringay Stroud Green Library

7:00 this evening.

you are all invited!

They have been trying hard with not a lot of success to find someone from the labour group to come and participate in the debate... The official line the labour group is putting out, is that this is not a political issue...

lol  .. when I was introduced to Angela Merkel she said .. oh, Sie sind aus England? Woher?  Tottenham, I said .. achso, Fussball ...  ja, I said, Football..

Simon is q. correct. It's about fairness. Some MPs have as little as 55,000 constituents, others have upto 120,000.

Pull the other one,  Justin..

....panic on the streets of Stroud Green...

Too late. The Boundary Commission have sunk the concrete pillars. The steel cables are on order. It's just a matter of winching Stroud Green a touch eastward.

The new section of underground railway will solve the noisy trains and rails problem. And there should be fantastic views from the new ski slopes as Finsbury Park is forced upwards.

Alan (AKA "Ski-slopes Stanton"), I think you can be forgiven for attempting humour and avoiding direct comment!

The Stroud Green Residents Association has recieved an unambigious statement from the Conservative Party on this issue. The position of the Liberal Democrat Party is well known.

The lack of a statement by the Labour Party (LP) is understandable and IMO, forgivable, due to the uncertainty of BC outcome.

If the LP and/or the incumbent MP for Tottenham made any public statement on the matter, it would simply be offering a hostage to fortune. They would be in the invidious position of having two chances out of four of getting it wrong:

  1. If the LP opposed the BC, that might appear a little unseemly, but if it failed to go ahead, that would be a no change and no new problem.
  2. If the LP supported the BC and the BC went ahead (even if the Tottenham MP has his hands full with the well-known problems of Tottenham), the damage is limited. But consider this:
  3. If the LP supported the BC, and it doesn't go ahead, that might prove embarrassing.
  4. If the LP opposed the BC, but BC nevertheless went ahead, that would be embarrassing, as the Tottenham MP would nonetheless be obliged to represent Stroud Green Ward when that Ward knew that the MP hadn't wanted them!

These difficulties would apply to any Ward adjacent to any Parliamentary Constituency that is a "safe seat", where that Ward is mooted as an addition.

The constituency of Tottenham is a "safe" seat (for the LP) and Stroud Green resident's votes – whichever way they were cast – would be able to make much less difference in Tottenham than in Hornsey & Wood Green. This is a function of course of the first-past-the-post system and perhaps another argument for proportional representation.

The Green Party has relatively strong support in Stroud Green Ward, but their position on BC is still unknown: there's still time for a statement from the Greens before the Boundary Commission's Public Consultation ends.

Residents of Harringay Ward have their own reasons to be concerned about the proposed boundary changes. They relate to the calving off of Seven Sisters Ward and possible implications for the resolution of the Arena Shopping Centre traffic management issue.

.

So how did GN8 round up this gaggle of effete and pretentious babblers?  They're obviously not our sort of people - though they were very happy to milk us for our vote against London Concrete which, alas, has not had the effect of wiping them all out as they had predicted. So why would we want them cohabiting with us in order to NOT vote for my great friend Lammy?  Let 'em keep their Crouch End "culture" and their Highgate Borders pretensions - and, since between us and them is fixed a great chasm, let them feck off our Harringayonline too.

Let's not forget that their constituency voted Lib Dem in the last election and sold us down the river to the great Lib Con.

Would they be so freaked if the two constituencies had the more accurate names of West and East Haringey?

Perhaps that should be Haringey East & Haringey West?  - Haringey being the more important part of the name..

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet"

Stephen you need to appreciate that the hatred by Stroud Green for everything east of the tracks runs so deep, that it even extended to the petty campaign over the last 12 months to delete "Harringay" from "Stroud Green and Harringay"  branch library.

Normally I'd be the first to get all cross about losing historic names but given that its parliamentary constituencies we're talking about, I'm inclined to agree with Pamish. Increasingly I refer to East Haringey in relation to problems that we have in common and lots of people call the Hornsey&WG side quite simply 'The West'. Would it be such a jump to simply rename them and save all this arm waving? After all the neighbourhoods will retain their original names.
