Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Cold weather can be seriously bad for our health. There are several things you can do, however, to keep you and your family well this winter.

Get your flu jab

It’s not too late to get your flu jab! The flu jab is free if you’re aged 65 or over, or if you have a long-term health condition. If you have young children or are the main carer of an older or disabled person you may also be eligible. It’s safe and the best way to stay protected from the flu virus.

Children can receive their vaccination as a nasal spray. Adults can get the vaccine via their GP or at many local pharmacies.  Find out more: www.nhs.uk/staywell

See a pharmacist early

At the first sign of winter illness, even if it’s just a cough or cold, get help from your pharmacist. Don’t wait until it gets more serious. The sooner you get advice the better. Find out the opening times for Haringey pharmacies open over Christ....

Evening and weekend appointments with a GP or Nurse

If you are feeling unwell, you can also book an appointment to see a GP or Nurse in the evening or on the weekend at one of Haringey’s primary care hubs.

Appointments are available:

  • 6:30pm-8:30pm on weekdays
  • 8:00am-8:00pm at the weekend

To make an appointment, you can call your own GP practice during normal business hours or call 0330 053 9499 during the hub opening hours. The hubs are also open on public holidays. More information about the hubs here.

NHS 111

If you do need help when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, dial 111. NHS 111 provides medical advice and can direct you to the right service for your needs. It is free to call and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The NHS website also has lots of handy tips that can help you and your family stay well during the cold season. Find out more: www.nhs.uk/winterhealth

Can I just mention that when I went to the Bridge House Medical Centre (where frankly it's always a bloody nightmare getting an appointment) I was able to get an appointment for that Saturday (I asked on a Wednesday) but had to go to Bounds Green.  So good that there was almost immediate availability on a Saturday, but not so good that I needed to go 2 miles up the road.

We are really pleased that you got an appointment on a Saturday at the hub at Bounds Green and hope you had a good experience of the service? We have 4 hubs in Haringey which provide evening and weekend appointments for everyone who is registered with a Haringey GP practice.  The hubs are therefore spread out across the borough to try and ensure there’s equitable access. For some people, the hubs may be further away than their own GP practice, but hopefully they provide a good alternative if you can’t get an appointment at your own practice or if you want an evening or weekend appointment. There’s some more information about the hubs on our website in case it’s helpful: http://www.haringeyccg.nhs.uk/Services/gp-hubs.htm

I always have my flu jab and my wife doesn't bother. Guess who gets flu? Yes, her.  Duhhh

Billie, I’ll take the 15% any day.

I stupidly didn’t get a jab this year and today have emerged from bed for the first time since 23rd (except for having to see an out of hours GP late Boxing Day night due to the added delights of bronchitis and pleurisy) and doubt I’ll set foot outside the house until the New Year.  It’s been bloody awful!

Time for a retro 1970s style public health advert?? :-))
