Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Nine times out of ten when I go out for a walk, someone spits relatively close to me or within ear shot. Usually it is joggers. Spitting or snorting out of nostrils is revolting and unhygienic at any time, but I’m astonished that people continue to do it during this pandemic. I don’t see female joggers spitting so why do guys feel it is necessary to do it?

It's been irritating me each time I step out.

Somehow haven't experienced it much from joggers but seen people just walking down the street and suddently they just spit. Yes, mostly male.

It bothers me even in 'peacetime' but right now it's borderline criminal behaviour.

Haven't worked up the nerve to confront people yet.

Noticed that most Countries are washing down Pavements and Streets, during this Virus

Is a major factor when so many seem to need to spit or snort

Worth looking for some cheap bleach and flushing down own entry and pavement

Aware the Contractors do have Jet washing facilities

I haven’t noticed any joggers but certainly people who are standing or walking.

I was interested but when you made it into a gender issue I completely zoned out.

How strange that when the word "jogger" is used it's almost always in a derogatory sense.

I went for my morning run in Lordship Rec the other day.  There was a man walking up the hill singing about Jesus. He paused his singing only to turn and spit.

That is the only spitting I have seen.

I've always worried about spitting as I'm from New Zealand where there is no TB so people do not get vaccinated. As it is quite common here in London (as is spitting) I am always concerned. I also have an autoimmune condition making me potentially more vulnerable...

There were also three men walking dogs and chatting to each other, all two metres apart. I assumed they were a dog walking group but they left no room for anyone to pass.  I gave them a wide berth by running on the grass but one of the dogs was off leash contrary to the current rules and it chased me.

By "only spitting I have seen" I of course mean since lockdown... I really hope we will see a culture change going forward as spitting of even less culturally acceptable now than it as before

On Totttenham High Road I have seen men and women and boys of all nationalities and races spitting at bus stops, while walking along, as soon as they come out of shops. It's sickening. TB was eradicated in Britain decades ago but has returned in the last 15 years and I'm convinced all this spitting has a lot to do with it. I know Enfield council were going to create a bye law to fine people who do this and wonder whether Haringey or even Mayor Khan have any plans to do similar.

I travelled to a number of European cities, east and west, and can't recall seeing anyone spit apart from the occasional street drinker. Every time I returned to Tottenham Hale station the first thing I'd see is someone creating a pool of spit at the bus stop. I believe street enforcement and police should fine people on the spot or arrest them for endangering public safety.

Any solutions?

People who spit will not not stop because there is a virus.  Otherwise they would not be spitting.

All council have the power to issue a fixed penalty notice for spitting.  See this post on HoL a few years ago

I remember that thread well!

Been feeling quite desperate about this - our next door neighbours are a group of 5 guys who have been lifting weights in the garden pretty much all day long every day and snorting and spitting constantly. Have resorted to building makeshift barriers along the fence so that my cat cant go under to their garden.

Saw a Facebook post that most overseas Countries. authorities are washing down public access areas. Saw a post that a firm is doing it in UK

Aware that Haringey Contractors do have Jet washing Facilities

Just need the local pressure to get them to use the Service

Not forgetting that Fire Brigade do wash down areas after fires and chemical leaks
