Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Something (??) digging earth from my flower boxes on utside windowsill at night

What could that be? Cat? Fox? They are right on my windowsill outside, ground floor but not very low and today around midnight while taking rubbish out I noticed earth all over 2 of the window boxes - it had been dug out of them. Put it back in, looked out of the window now so 2.5 hours later and exactly the same.

Really puzzled as was sitting in the room all that time with cats right by the window and have not heard anything digging there.

Has this happened to anyone else?

What could it be?

Could be squirrels unearthing their winter food supplies.

Same thing happening to me! I think squirrels trying to bury their food as I found a piece of Turkish bread in one of mine!
Foxes go through ours. The large, muddy paw prints on the windowsill are a giveaway.

That is so weird Anka - I too have noticed this happen several times in my front window boxes and have been similarly puzzled! I have no idea tbh - the paranoid side of me almost wondered at one point whether it was someone looking for a front door key?! If people would be crazy enough to leave a spare in their window box? Very bizarre...

Hi everyone. Had the same problem happening to my flower pots lately! Right where I have daffodil bulbs!

Last week I woke up during the night and saw a shadow on my windowsil, it was a 4 legged animal. I assume it was either a cat or a fox! Didn't look anything like a rat or a squirrel. I wonder if there is any way to keep them away..? :(
Hi, I've had the same trouble for about a year, and squirrels were the problem. The only solution that I have found to be effective is chicken wire in the box. It's not tociceable when looking up from street level and solves the problem.

Yes, we have a fox in the garden also. I sowed about a hundred bulbs in the autumn then covered the ground with chicken wire; it doesn't look so pretty at the moment, but it has done the trick.

Could be, you get birds singing all night in London. Quien sabe?!

Squirrels very active in my garden this week, I think it must be the very cold weather making them desperate to get enough food. Actually, I could go and dig up the bluebell bulbs for them, they get far too invasive later on in the year!

Yes I have this problem too, I don't know if it is squirrels or foxes but it is bulbs they are after. Better than chicken wire you can buy rigid green plastic covered wire sheets with approx 2 inch square mesh, use strong wire cutters and top alll your bulb containers with it. Cover with layer of bark.

Small rolls of various types of mesh cheap in Wilkinsons a couple of years ago (fairly sure it was there, but poss Homebase or B&Q)

Just to throw another theory into the mix... my indoor pot plants have been dug out by mice. Big holes too, not just little mouse sized holes, and a huge mess.
