Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Aside from the general pollution on Green Lanes the "smoke" pollution seems to be getting worse. You can smell it most evenings and sometimes even see it in the air.

I'd guess it either comes from the Turkish restaurant grills or domestic fires (although I'd assume that, given the weather at the moment, it is currently mainly the restaurants).

Has anyone else noticed this? It seems to have got worse with the refurbished Selale but it may be that this just coincided with the air being a bit stiller through the summer.

Do the restaurants have to have cleaning systems to remove the "smoke" particles from the extractor outlets or is it fine for it all to be sent out into the air?

Often on still bright days, the leaden-hued smoke from the plethora of kebab houses in Wood Green sits over the High Road like a low cloud, I feel sorry for anyone living in the flats above the shopping city.

Notice it most evenings standing in the garden. We are on Warham Road. It is pretty bad. Think the council should be looking into it more urgently as those grills run on coal so the fumes could contain all sorts of toxins.

My money on it never getting solved

As sure current councillors will not want to Offend Traders

Is rather a Joke when others have wood Burners being threatened

Though I share your scepticism, I'm not quite so pessimistic about council action. When a restaurant materialised at the end of my road some years ago - illegally built over Christmas in a former yard, without planning permission - and constantly spewed smoke from an unfiltered chimney, Haringey took enforcement action quite quickly because of the pollution. In contrast, it did take months of complaints to get the premises properly licensed, as the owners made numerous planning appeals (but finally went bust). Multiple cuts to council services since then might mean they wouldn't be so quick off the mark these days even on environmental grounds.

We keep hearing about Cuts to Services. Where is the Council Funding Going ?

Last Staff to be reduced should be enforcement Teams.                                                                As they normally cover their Running costs from Legal Actions and increased Rate Payers

Yes Central Government is wrongfully cutting Central Funding

But Haringey Population is growing at alarming Rate

Where is All the Rate money going , Commercial and Domestic

Not forgetting Traffic Fines etc

Still interested to understand how Civic Centre Staff grows while Services are Cut ?

Any publicly funded service will always tell you that they are underfunded because they would be foolish to admit that they have enough money or too much of it.

Like UK's Foreign Aid Budget. Which has to be Borrowed

They pay millions to Consultants to see how they can spend it

Otherwise people will demand Budget is reduced

Yes it is a constant problem. We have asthma sufferers in our family and it really effects them.

you won’t stop it though as what the traders say, goes around here.

Totally in with the council

Dear All

The issue of smoke from the restaurants was raised with me some moths ago. I asked the enforcement officers about it. They provided a very long response which - in summary - is that individuals need to keep a record of how it is affecting you. General comments and criticisms won't work. The restaurants comply with the legal requirements and rules regarding extractors etc, so any complaint must be rooted in what is happening to an individual based on a log/record. I can check again as this was sometime ago but that is my recollection of the key points. I did press this issue and as I recall, they did provide a very comprehensive answer.

You can get in touch with me at; zena.brabazon@haringey.gov.uk

Zena

Zena Brabazon

Cllr, Harringay Ward

Cabinet Member for Children and Families

Deputy Leader of the Council

And therefore nothing will change

vote Green not Labour and maybe we can stop our air being polluted.

I'm not sure how you've taken that away from Zena's comments, Penguin. She's clearly stated that you need to keep a record of how it's affecting you personally for an investigation to be raised and actioned. This sounds entirely reasonable to me. She's even shared her email to make it quick and convenient to get in touch, showing that as a councillor she's transparent and accessible. This seems like a pretty positive response from one of our elected officials.
