Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Slugs!
There seems to have been lots more slug activity than usual recently – as well as voluminous slime trails outside, I've now had one or two inside the house (and found a slug as well), which really isn't normal. I suppose they might be getting in through gaps round pipes or airbricks or something, but the ugh factor is high and I’d like to find a solution. Has anyone any advice on preventing this (apart from cementing every external crack or gap I can find)?.
It's not a problem I've ever had before in over 25 years of living here, so maybe an experienced gardener could suggest if there’s something specific that might be attracting them now or if this has just been a particularly bad year for slugs.

We get slugs indoors fairly regularly - I absolutely hate it but we've tried blocking up gaps and nothing seems to work. We always have loads in our garden too and have done for the 3 years or so that we've lived on the ladder. Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm reluctant to put down poison because so many cats visit our garden and I've heard it can harm them.

Good to know I'm not being singled out for sluggish treatment but sounds as though I may just have to live with it. It seems strange that this has only just become such a problem, which is why I wondered if something might have changed; perhaps it's a combination of milder winters and wet summers that's encouraged the little blighters, but who knows. If anyone has any constructive solutions (apart from copious use of pellets), I'd also be pleased to hear them.

It's the warm and wet summer we've had this year. Everything in my garden that can be eaten has been! If you can trace the trails back to the origin you could try putting a thick layer of salt across where they're coming in but they can squeeze through the most astonishingly small gaps. You could also try putting thorny clippings, egg shells, sharp grit and so on under and around air-bricks etc., outside.
I don't use slug pellets either. I'm hoping for an invasion of hedgehogs to sort mine out.

I used to have this and they seemed to be coming in somewhere round the bay window. I solved it by sticking really thin copper tape all round the edge of the carpet under the windows. Touch wood, they've not reappeared since so I'm claiming that!
The tape is approx 1 inch wide and really thin with a sticky side that you peel a cover off - really sorry, I just can't remember where I got it, but most likely Homebase or Hornsey Pet and Garden in C End.

there is a good solution which I've used called Nemaslug. It is much more eco-friendly than pellets. You put it on the soil and it kills the newly hatched offspring. Works very well. There are probably others like it on the market.

Many thanks for these suggestions. Barring an unlikely visit from St Tiggywinkles, I'll see if some of the other suggested remedies have an effect.

Another household with slug issues here! Found one in the kitchen this week and flung it out because salt just felt like way too much torture.

I've had this in the past too. Slugs love damp cellars, or will hide down the gap between a damp inside wall & the skirting board. As someone's already suggested, follow the trail & try & prevent them coming in. Copper tape is very effective & you'll find it at garden centres. Also for any slugs which may be already in the house, put a saucer of beer out for them & put the dead slugs. Please don't put any slug pellets down, it's so easily passed through the food web & is one of the reasons for hedgehog population decline. Let us know how you get on & good luck!
