Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Love Clean Streets app - I was put on to it by some local counsellor I think... And it really is quick to use. Open the app, select where the issue is (it will use your location automatically) and then take a pic, attach it, say what the issue is and post it. I (unfortunately) have to do it constantly... There is just so much rubbish. Everywhere. All the time. I still have no idea why nothing gets done about it. I've raised with them a bunch of times and the response was a sort of 'We can't put cameras everywhere...' but there are specific problematic spots, and it's just getting worse... anyway... I digress.

The app. I suggest it. They usually clear it pretty quickly. I've logged one once from home, and they came within the hour and collected rubbish from across the road.

Unfortunately today's one was discarded syringes on one of the ladder streets... but if enough people keep doing it - there will at least be a record we can probably get access to that shows how bad it's become and that something needs done.

Thanks for raising this again. Yes, it's a very efficient system - started in Lewisham over ten years ago (as reported on HoL - other posts about the app linked via tag under original post above).

Dumped items tend to be cleared within 24-48 hours. The app can also be used to report other street issues. For example I used it to report a missing street name plate on our road last year. That took a few months to fix, but it did get done eventually.

I know a few people like me who've been using if for years. The more widely used it is, the better.

I'm also aware that some people resist using it, saying that they're 'not doing the council's job', or 'it's not outside my house, why should I do it for them'. My view is that we're all in this together: it takes 2 or 3 minutes tops and creates a nicer street environment. So if you think you might be able to spare 2 or 3 minutes at some point, why not download the app.

Exactly! The one I logged yesterday, I just thought about other people walking up that road, especially kids, and especially the people's whose gate the syringes were outside of... So hopefully people can start to do it a bit more and we can start to see a difference! (Although, I really can't believe the amount of dumping that takes place - it's crazy!)

I used it recently and was amazed at how efficient it was. I emailed the office after asking that they specifically pass on my thanks to the guys who came at 6am to clear the dumped sofa.

My concern though is that if they become widely known for being so good, that may actually increase the number of dumpers...

That's one of the arguments regularly made by the naysayers. But, I think all the evidence suggests that the lazy antisocial sods who want to dump do it anyway.

On balance, if Veolia continue to be as efficient as they are today, reporting makes for a much nicer environment. Any dumping encouragement effect caused by an increase in resident reporting activity  would have a marginal effect that would be far outweighed by the positive side of the equation.

Agreed!
