Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The shop next to the Salisbury is now up for grabs. Let's imagine what might go there.

You really need one of those handy shops selling mobile phone cases.

Walking through the upper floor of Shopping Shitty today couldn't help but notice the independents have practically taken over as the nationwide stores have retreated. Only Boots, Primark, Wilkinsons & New Look are left. Most of the independents seem to be competing to sell apparel. Very strange.

Looks like that's the end of that grubby anti social club that was in there then, that can only be a good thing! It looks like it was a newsagents many moons ago. Maybe a jewelery shop? We need more of those.

a betting shop would be good, it's a pain having to stumble at least 30 yards out of the pub to place a bet, would be much more convenient if it were next door

You're tempting fate, Paul. Now at least we'lll have someone to vilify if we does turn out that Metrobet or Agora is just relocating.

and if we're lucky, the big empty glass-fronted corner unit the other side of the Salisbury (next to Tesco) will also become a bookies.... only then would life feel complete!

It was my barbers. A traditional place, it was like walking back in time to the 60's. It was full of friendly faces and good conversation and one would leave with a great hair cut and change from a tenner. Steve and his father rented out the front room to the handful of Greek pensioners left in Harringay, to sit and chew the fat over a game of cards and a cup of coffee, hardly anti social?  I for one am totally gutted he has sold up.

I meant steph not steve!

Ben, Steph has opened a shop in Southgate. My OH is still getting his hair cut by him and enjoying his wit and humour. You should get him to tell you about the time he and his wife visited a nudist garden. I've also enjoyed (second hand) his views on football.

It was a nice newsagents a while ago. It was still in operation in 1988 as you can see the ad for travel cards on Hugh's picture of the 29 bus called  "Green Lanes, Harringay 1988". I think when they were closing the newsagent said the rent etc were getting too high for him.

hob - You're right, it was a newsagent previously. It was when I moved to the area in late 1989, but eventually (can't remember when) it could not compete once Maqsood, on the other side of the road just up from the Post Office, really got going with a much bigger shop and much wider range of fags 'n' mags 'n' stuff.

The closest I've ever got to taking a picture of the barbers was this. I was too shy to go any further. Maybe someone with a bit more 'confidence' should go in and get some pictures before it's too late...
