Does anybody know what is happening with the caravans in Sainsbury's car park. Do they have special permission or dispensation, or is this an unofficial official council camping site?

Makes sense - we were speculating about that at the time, but when I was there, there was only one caravan and nothing else and there's usually loads of vehicles when there's a film crew there.
I think before Sainsbury's massively expanded there was a Traveller site there
Of course there used to be a stadium before that. No problems with trvallers back then, because there were more free and public common spaces.
I have no particular opinion about the travellers, but it's interesting that my partner was fined for staying in the car park over the few hours allowed (she couldn't actually leave because of the regular, Sunday afternoon congestion), after speaking to the manager to ensure there would be no fine because of the congestion and difficulty in actually leaving the car park. The fine duly arrived, and her appeal turned down. Clearly she was in the wrong kind of vehicle...
Presumably the fine was one imposed by Sainsburys. Does that have any legal basis that is not contestable. We are not talking about council imposed fixed penalties. Lots of private car parks impose 'fines' but these are mostly used to intimidate people and if they actually went to court wouldn't have any legal basis outside a basic law of trespass hich should be easy to defend. But lawyer I am not.
You can't fine caravans, they're not DVLA registered, if there is a vehicle amongst them it will be on a cloned/pool reg-plate anyway.
Bumping the Sainsbury's car park caravans discussion: height barriers have now been fitted just beyond the numberplate recognition display. Vehicles over 2.1 metres high have a handful of spaces where the recycling containers are. Lots of bollards installed along the pavement by the W5 bus stop enclosing the main parking area to prevent driving over the kerbs.
Ah, that’s what the height barriers are all about. Thanks.
Take it Sainsbury's is the one on Cambridge Road - Enfield.
Morrisons have also had issues and put in Barriers - Also has had concrete blocks. Brought in when there is a Threat
As has Tesco's at Edmonton.
Remember reading that near to these Stores - Enfield - That private land had been filled with Rubbish. Reports state it was from them camped in Sainsbury's. Was on TV News.
No Bob, Sainsbury's at the Arena, Harringay.
Passed IKEA Edmonton on Tuesday - They have the Large Blocks restricting access to their Car Park. Also Noticed Extra Security around Tesco Car Park
I saw these a few days ago. I spoke to a rather weary looking security guard and asked what was going on. He said it was a right problem, and that they (as a private security company) are fined £500 every time it happened, and he suggested it was happening every couple of weeks!
I suspect though it will not stop anyone with an angle grinder for long as the weak link is the padlock on the barriers that allows the bar to be moved (for obvious reasons)...
