Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Sainsburys Carpark
Does anybody know what is happening with the caravans in Sainsbury's car park. Do they have special permission or dispensation, or is this an unofficial official council camping site?

Is there a better place than Sainsbury’s car park? It’s never full, they aren’t damaging grass or property. The travellers that have stopped in downhills did a reasonable job of cleaning up after themselves so it seems like a stereotype to expect this of this group.

Tell it to Haringey council who closed a local official site and didn't provide the promised replacement. Judgemental.

I presume Sainsburys own the land. It is a private car park so the council is probably unable to do anything. Sainburys have notices limiting parking and these are obviously being flouted or Sainsburys are turning a blind eye.. There is an obvious iniquity if Sainsburys are fining or threatening to fine regular customers, but doing nothing about people parking long term on their property without paying any notice to Sainsbury's regulations. I imagine if Sainsburys try to evict them it will be a lengthy and expensive legal process so they may well be inclined to let things slide.

Gracious. I feel like I'm back in the home counties. Perhaps they're common as well, horror of horrors.

Went by there yesterday. Half a dozen caravans parked up at the back where no one leaves their vehicles anyway. All looked clean and tidy

People need somewhere to live, whether their rubbish disposal habits are socially acceptable or not. Sainsbury's car park is definitely preferable to a park (it'll give the many men in luminous safety wear something to do besides unhelpfully re-arranging traffic cones), it's never full and no-one is losing out except Sainsbury's. If you have a problem with rubbish everywhere (and I certainly do) your time would be better spent picking up some of the mounds of detritus left in all the local parks by people who think the plastic wrapping on their supermarket 'picnics' magically disappears after they've left it behind. One sunny day and it's like the local tip exploded. Littering doesn't begin and end with people who live in caravans.

They are in caravans and campers which generally have chemical loos or other facilities. Anyway Sainsburys toilets are a hundred yards away. I don't think a car park is the right place either, especially one which posts parking restrictions. I agree they are not a nuisance at the moment, but I am concerned if word gets out this may become a mini city. But at the moment it is Sainsbury'sproblem, not mine.

Yes - to Finsbury Park - apparently some of the Sainsbury's group moved from the car park to Finsbury Park on Thursday. Some were on the hard standing by the basketball courts, others on the road as it sweeps round past the New River bit. The park was closed to vehicles because of this on Thursday evening (presumably to stop more travellers getting in, rather than to stop the ones there from getting out) and was still closed to vehicles this morning. At least the council isn't discriminating in its closure of the park to vehicles, although it isn't well sign-posted, so regular park users were getting a bit shirty this morning!
The people on the hard standing had left by 8.30 on Thursday evening, but I didn't go near the other spot this morning, so I don't know if anyone is still there.
