Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So glad the width of my handle bars have been shortened by 4inch or it certainly would have dragged me under as it went passed-and yes I managed to swing off onto the pavement to avoid it- so this was just overtaking me on upper clapton road

So I stopped the lorry further up the road, got a really good picture of the beast- whilst the Romanian drivers hurled abuse at me- put a report into the police offering photos, for them to write back and say as it was a foreign vehicle they couldn't do anything about it

So after the last fatality at elephant and castle last week, they had loads police there- but its all pointless unless they clamp down on these foreign vehicle coming in, without any regard for cyclists- poor visability- driving on roads far too narrow for them and on the wrong side of the road- they are even using ST annnes road as a ratrun now

I@m quite sure a less experienced cyclist would have been killed by these idiots- makes my blood boil they can continue to drive in such a dangerous and wreckless way

That is unacceptable for the Police to say they can't do anything about it because of the foreign plates. Of the two HGVs that got stuck in Ringslade Rd this week, at least one had Romanian plates and he got a fine.

Presumably if you'd been a police officer on duty there'd also be nothing they could do about it..

I would push the police again. What they really mean there is that it's too much hassle for them to do anything. Just because it is foreign doesn't exempt it from UK law whilst in the UK.

Hi Tigha - sorry to hear about your experience, have you tried this site? you can report dangerous drivers via this website, https://secure.met.police.uk/roadsafelondon/
it may help others as well.

Worth doing, but the police explicitly state Roadsafe is an information collecting exercise rather than a way to report a crime. I agree with Andrew, tigha needs to visit a police station and insist they take this seriously.

Hi Tigha

When I worked for the Council around 12 years ago years ago we ran a project through the New Deal for Communities which tried to tackle the foreign lorries. This focused mainly on lorries parked illegally and overnight on Vale Road and round the industrial estates.  We purchased a huge lorry wheel clamp which I think was used and should be somewhere in the Council. We also tried to contact the companies whose phone and fax numbers were on the vans to hold them to account. It was a long time ago and its much easier to work across Europe now so if you have the details and photos you should pursue this with the police, and with motoring, road haulage and cycling organisations who could give good advice.

I say  this also because I sit as a magistrate and we recently heard applications for fines incurred in European countries for traffic offences to be pursued here. There is an EU agreement which enables the country where the offence occurs and where the penalty was applied, to transfer it to the country where the offender lives. They are then summonsed to court in their home country and the fines are imposed and collected.

We had never come across this before and I can't recall the name of the department doing this work.

But, I could find out and then let you know.

OMG I'm glad your ok, the police don't seem to take it seriously , a matter for our MEP's about jurisdiction, Did the police explain the law or explore it at all?
