Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone else noticed the really dirty state the whole of the Gardens is in? There is rubbish everywhere, awful smells and the numerous building projects on each road don't seem to help. I don't think there are the same number of cleaning slots that we had a while back, and I haven't seen the roads being washed for quite a while. I've been in touch with Veolia and hoping to hear from them soon.

I don't think it's just the Gardens. I've noticed an increase in the amount of rubbish on the streets around Haringey in general over the last year. Sometimes I report it, eg if it's bulk waste/fly tipping or dangerous (broken glass). I wondered if it might be a sign of austerity spending cuts, or perhaps just the fact that the older I get the more likely I am to become quietly furious about this sort of thing. I bought one of those grabby stick things but you can't clear every last bit up and it drives me nuts that people seemingly can't be arsed to put things in bins in the first place.
Haringey council were proposing to reduce street cleaning

If they went ahead that will explain it.

My husband or I now do a daily litter pick for our small street. It seems to discourage people from flytipping. He has dealt with some shocking stuff though...food waste bin filled with human faeces for example. Our street cleaners are heroes.
OMG!

Yes, I have to agree that our street cleaners are heroes. What a thankless, awful task and boy do we notice when their services are cutback due to spending cuts. We too try and keep our part of the street as clean as possible, hoping to set an example for those around us. If we all did our bit, I'm sure it would make a difference but sadly not everyone does, and nor do they care about living in such disgusting conditions.

My understanding is that it has been cut by around 50% - others will have the precise figures...

In a 5 min walk from falkland road to Turnpike Lane tube, here's my photo log of the mess yesterday. The park was bad.

It's outrageous and it is so much worse here than other parts of London I've lived in. I moved to Harringay from Dalston nearly 2 years ago and I am still shocked by the amount of litter on the streets and fly tipping that goes on

I use Love street clean to report rubbish. I often go through Nothingale garden and there is always rubbish. I believe we need more cctv in those area so that councils can issue more fines and supply the budget cut. let people pay for their damn rubbish!

Rubbish seems to be a constant and recurring theme for where we live and on this site.

It's certainly not getting any better, probably worse. The smells are getting worse (not just the recent heat). Some people do use my street corner as their open air toilet as well their al fresco diner and rubbish dump. The mornings reveal a right old stinky and nasty mess some days. The pavements are stained so badly that it's best not to look down. All in all, I would say our area is sometimes very unpleasant to trudge through. The council could send cleaners every hour but until the attitude of people is changed (no, I don't have answers how to hand) the mess will just keep getting worse I think.

Unfortunately, there are so many takeaways on the main street with so many people who like to drop the litter that these takeaways produce. McDonalds is one of the worst around.

The real crazy thing is that the main street is cleaned every day. The streets where the litter ends up?

Once a week.

You can blame austerity all you like. But a council who makes millions from ruining Finsbury Park twice a year and cannot spend some money on clearing up the local streets? Well, make your own mind up. People will all get down that polling station next time and vote for the same old council.

Hopefully the Corbynistas are on the case! I'm sure they have a plan for every day issues! Ahem....
