Big Green Books were the victim of a distraction robbery yesterday and some ratbag made off with 600 quid. That's a lot for a small business to lose. The police are not hopeful of recovering the money either, as there were no witnesses
Simon Key, founder of the BGBS told journalist Sam Jordison, "£600 is a LOT of money for us and it's gonna really hurt not having it. Hopefully we'll sell a few books over the next week or so and claw some of it back. "
If you want to help, you can
a) buy a book either in store or online
b) if, like me, your TBR pile is toppling over and you want to help now, Sam has set up a Just GIving page for you to donate your lunch money.

Bastards. Can we organise a mass shop-in where we all pledge to spend money? Like you did for the Cypriot grocers.
You mean a cashmob? We organised one for Harringay Market then a few months later one for BGB. I'm sure someone could organise a second BGB one.
That's the word. The thesaurus wouldn't find it for me.
will pop in there on Saturday
Disgusting thing to do to a small business and such nice people too. Going to get down there and buy some kids books tomorrow.
Great news - good people have contributed £2,450 to replace the £600 as at 9 this morning.
Bumping as the Guardian article has got loads of attention and you all may like to add your own comments, especially to answer some of the sneering ones who wonder why they didn't have a shop full of CCTV cameras etc.
