Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Local residents will help decide which potholes and damaged road surfaces get fixed and which get left untreated in their neighbourhoods.

The new Area Committees have been asked by the council to help consult residents about where and which potholes most need to be treated.

Last winter’s severe weather caused extensive road cracking because freezing water expands in the tarmac, breaking the road surface. The thawing ice then runs into further cracks, re freezes and creates more potholes, gulleys and sinking manhole covers.

TfL has allocated some extra, limited funds for fixing the problem and the Area Committees will consider residents' views when deciding how that additional funding should be spent.

The Committees and the Area Forums have been given details such as the costs of repairing different kinds of infrastructure problems, for example:

  • a single pothole costs in the region of £50 to repair
  • a small patch covering 2sq.m would be about £100
  • a larger patch covering an area of 2m by 10m would cost about £1,000
  • resurfacing a 25m section of a road – across its full width - could cost around £10,000

Residents can give their views via their Area Committee.
