Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi,

I have friends currently visiting us, and one wants to visit a real English pub, with a good selection of real Ale or decent beers. He brews his own so seems to know his stuff.

Any ideas where we could go for Sunday lunch (must allow kids). Would ideally like to stay local, but could take a bus somewhere together.

Thanks in advance for your help.

@harringayonline Three Compasses, Hornsey High St should meet his ale requirements. They do food

Three Compasses don't allow kids in.

You should really go to The Southampton Arms in Gospel Oak. You'll struggle to find a better real ale selection in London although I'm not sure if a Pork Pie counts as Sunday Lunch!

Three Compasses is good. You could also try The Jolly Butchers in Stokie great selection of beers and they do food.

I'd also recommend the Edinburgh Cellars in Newington Green 4-5 ales plus food.

I'd suggest Camden Brewery / Grafton arms / abbey tavern in Kentish town.
The Brownswood on Green Lanes near the castle climbing wall is a great pub. Good selection on tap, good Sunday roast and very child friendly. Have a look at them online. You can reserve tables too.
The Bull in Highgate has its own brewery and massive selection of English and world beers and also does fantastic Sunday Lunch. You should book though. The Southampton as mentioned above is also brilliant but just does pies. Brownswood and Butchers are ok but just normal pubs really, if you are looking for something a bit special then I would suggest The Bull (and if he likes whiskey too you could pop into the Red Lion & Sun afterwards). You might want to take him down to Jacks off license on Stroud Green Rd after you have been, they use the same supplier as The Bull for bottled beers, so he can carry on drinking them when he gets home.
So where did you end up going?

The Southampton Arms in Gospel Oa is small ..old feeling but has great ales on..not really suitable for kids though... But locally dare I say the Maynard on Park Road N8 as been having some lovely pints of local breweries from Twickenham and Camden which are all tasty ! and they let kids in and do a good Sunday lunch..booking advisable.

The Garden Ladder serves (local) Redemption beers and does Sunday lunch, although I must admit I haven't tried it myself. I vote the Rose & Crown, Stoke Newington Church St: a classically beautiful pub with great drinks and food and suits families. Gets busy but they serve all day and may take bookings. It's a nice walk up through Clissold Park and even along the New River (Homebase to The Castle) if you're energetic.

Agree re Southampton arms, it's great for beer (outstanding, I'd say) but not for kids or lunch. The Bull is recommended but it's quite a way. Sounds like The Brownswood has improved somewhat, must give that a try!

The Brownswood is awesome now, compared to what it used to be like.

It's not that difficult to get to The Bull, just take the W5 from the other side of the bridge by Harringay Library then get off at Stanhope Rd and it's ten mins walk from there. Or you can walk up the Parkland Walk.

the beer isn't great (just one ale usually), but the ferry boat inn over near tottenham hale is very child friendly and has a garden
