3 Rare True Service Trees (Sorbus domestica) are threatened at the rear of St. Anne's Hospital. This is because Fire Engines cannot get through the car park adjacent to the railway line when cars are parked on both sides, so the car park is to be widened. Because the land on the railway side has special conservation status, the car park cannot be widened on this side, so the Sorb trees, which stand only about a metre from the edge of the car park on the northern side, may be cut down so the car park can be widened here.
This would be a tragic loss of a very rare species of tree. They fruited prolifically this year, producing literally thousands of delicious (once fully ripe) sorb fruits, which are virtually unknown and greatly undervalued.
Surely there must be a way to both allow the Fire engines access AND to allow the True Service Trees to remain? Who would the appropriate people be to speak to? Can anyone help?

Can I suggest you contact the Friends of St Ann's Green Spaces in the first instance to see if they know about this. They are in contact with various organisations on the site.
This is their FB page
Email: friendsofstags@gmail.com
Thank you, I have emailed Stags, and hope to hear back from them...but I will take a look at their Facebook page.
Thanks Liz, yes I did, and I think it was them that met with the Director of Estates on the 11th, who said that there is no plan to cut the trees down, but that they will plan the work around them. Hurray!
Surely the solution is to reduce, or move, the parking. I thought we were moving away from the 'car is king' era?
Agreed! I believe the Hospital Trust are reducing car parking....but perhaps are unaware of the importance of retaining these particular trees?
Might be worth trying to speak to Haringey Council's Arboricultural department, Alex & Claire's details are here
Thank you, yes, definitely people to contact. I'll do that in the next couple of days.
Contact Councillor Mike Hakata.
Surely it's not beyond the wits of architects to move the carpark a few yards. There are other Service trees on the site, [I believe] but that's not the point. We're already losing trees on the site, we really need to keep this, very rare, one. And we don't want an enormous carpark anyway...
I agree Peter, but we need to contact whoever is going to handle this car park widening to persuade them that it is do-able to save the trees if they have the will.
Friends of StAGS was set up to hold the managers of both sections of the St Ann's site to account in relation to the green spaces and trees, and so we were very concerned to read this in HOL. We've followed up and the Mental Health Trust management assure us that there are no plans to cut down the True Service trees at the location Sally describes. They plan to work around them in their parking arrangements.
That is a relief, but of course we will follow up and keep checking. StAGS are also working with a Hospital staff group "Greener St Ann's". We facilitate formal quarterly meetings with the Mental Health Trust/Hospital management and the owners of the new housing site- the GLA, plus the developer Catalyst, stART and local green groups involved across both sections of the site. We have also organised activities for families led by Liz Ixer and tree walks for adults and worked with TCV to create a woodland trail in the SINC woodland.
