Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Following last year's regeneration of Harringay Town Centre, last night, along with other members of the LCSP traffic sub-group, I attended a meeting with Haringey Council's new traffic supremo (Member for the Environment, Cllr Stuart McNamara). Cllr McNamara agreed to review traffic management across all areas of Harringay (and yes that's Harringay, not Haringey). 

There is a public meeting to kick off the process and discuss traffic congestion, rat running and high traffic flow in local roads. All are invited to attend. Details are below:

One of the important things for me Ahson, is that any solution isn't tinkering here and there. The easing of the traffic on Hewitt has brought about some real problems on neighbouring roads, especially Beresford. Rather than managing the problem all that seems to be happening is to move it from one street to another.
What I want to see is a solution for the area as a whole so the meeting on 25th is a good start.

It will be very unfair if that sort of piling on by a particular interest group were to make a difference to the outcome, surely we should all be aspiring to get whats best for the neighbourhood not just for one street?

I've always said that Wightman Rd is the key, people are mostly looking to just get over the railway. Michael is right and I can't think why I didn't think of it before. The Wightman/Hornsey Park/Turnpike Lane junction was reconfigured, Hornsey Park and Wightman Rd never used to meet. Push it back to a simple entrance, similar to down the other end and I think the problem part of the traffic will be dealt with. At the moment it is very inviting for both leaving and entering the ladder.

Any tinkering, anything that isn't just Wightman Rd, is unfair. I hope Cllr McNamara can see that.

I'm sympathetic to Ant's desire to reconfigure the Willoughby/Frobisher/Green Lanes mess but I think that is being dealt with across the other side of Green Lanes with the reconfiguration of Wightman Rd.

Agree with you that changes to the Wightman/Turnpike Lane junction could be good for the Ladder. Even just something simple like removing the No Right Turn out of Wightman into Turnpike Lane would be cheap and make a good difference.

I don't agree that anything other than that would be unfair though. The current distribution of traffic on the Ladder isn't even or fair, and it is possible to do some small changes which could make things better.

Its going to be difficult to do those sort of small changes now though because with the lack of openness around how the Hewitt change got done and and the obvious problems its caused and the misleading about it being a trial will make it difficult for people to trust the council to do more changes fairly. No signs that the council haven learnt much from that either from how these current traffic consultations appear to be happening.

Ant, if your 'no right turn' is removed, loads   more   people could use Wightman as a way of missing out Green Lanes between Endymion Rd and Turnpike Lane Station/Westbury Ave, I think? Wightman is also part of the Ladder. No easy answers eh?

Loads of cars already do that and just go down Fairfax and Frobisher instead because they cant turn right into Turnpike Lane. Turnpike Lane is pretty congested so its not desirable enough to cause more cars to go that way even if the no right turn were removed, probably they'd just keep using Fairfax and Frobisher anyway unless something else was also done to nudge them off to Turnpike Lane where they belong. WIth the no right turn there they have a valid excuse for using a residential street as a through route, at least without the no right turn there is no longer that excuse.

Great to see some solidarity with the residents of Turnpike Lane .
Living on a busy contested street can be tough, and it's Great to see people proposing a more even distribution of traffic across the whole area to help others not as blessed as themselves.

Turnpike Lane is an A road. Isn't it a reasonable goal to want through traffic to go on A roads instead of residential streets?

& the only solution to London's traffic problems is to cut traffic volumes, not to increase them. One method of doing this is to cut available road space.

Overuse of Fairfax and Frobisher could be addressed by reversing the flow of traffic on them, so no entry from Wightman Road, thus giving even more local benefit to removing your    no right turn at Turnpike Lane. That would also reduce the traffic conflicts at the Frobisher/Willoughby junction.

And for the benighted Beresford Road, already suffering Hewitt-no-right-turn overload, there could be a no-left-turn prohibition to stop it being used as a Wightman/Green Lanes northbound ratrun, at least. Bingo!

Gordon, I worry about very local solutions. A no right turn here and a no left there. The area needs a solution as a whole and that has to be preventing traffic seeing the ladder, including Wigghtman, as an alternative to Green Lanes. Perhaps a short term experiment would be th complete ban on parking on GL so that it turns into what it was designed as, two lanes in each direction. Say for three months with traffic monitoring on adjacent roads before during and after to look at the impact?

I acknowledge that my 'whack-a-mole' offerings cannot address the wider problem, hence the ironic Bingo! as a signoff.

I agree that radical ways of increasing the traffic flow on Green Lanes from Endymion Road right through to the north end of Wood Green are needed to reduce the spillover into side streets and secondary roads.

I am surprised that there isn't a 'tidal' northbound bus lane in the evening to match the morning southbound one, for example.
