Photos potentially lost on SD memory card
Hi does anyone know of a place that can hopefully save the photo's on my memory card? I didn't accidentally delete them - what seems to have happened is that the card somehow got corrupted whilst in the E drive of my laptop. I was copying them to a disc when it happened so I have some but really want all.
If you know of a place or a Techie person that would be great. I have contacted Marek who is recommended here for laptop repairs but this isn't his area of expertise.

There are quite a few easy-to-use recovery apps you can get online. I used one successfully a few years ago. I can’t remember which one, but am sure a bit of googling will narrow the field to a handful of the best options.

The key thing is not to add any more data to the card as that would overwrite the 'address' part and make unscrambling much more difficult. Switch the Write/Lock tab off meanwhile to stop that happening (a little slider switch on the side of an SD card).
As Hugh says, google is your friend. I have recovered images when I've been threatened and told to delete images (don't ask...) Fine, I press delete, look they have gone. Until I get home and run the recovery software which often comes with a card, at least the more upmarket ones. Takes ages but they do come back.
PS Don't use that E drive again just in case - get an external USB plug-in card reader, they cost under a tenner.

CardRescue is one of them but there are many others doing mostly the same thing. None free, as far as I know.
Also, depending on which brand it is and whether or not pros use it, they might have their own recovery app available for download. SanDisk charges for it whereas I think Lexar's is free.
Might also be the card reading slot on your computer. If you have a separate card reader available, it might be able to read cards that your computer can't.

Thanks all for your responses. I found a couple on google, supposedly free but then couldn’t go any further until I bought the service which made me suspicious as I assumed it was a scam site but if as you say you always have to pay I’ll go ahead. The payment was £19.99 does that sound about right?

some random googling brought up this handy step-by-step guide

then sells you its software (but you could try one of the free ones instead). So - 1. try another machine. 2. Try CHKDSK etc.
The free software may be that because it just runs Undelete which will not help with corrupted files. To unscramble corrupted files you prob will have to buy software. If what you tried has found and listed the files it sounds OK (disclaimer...etc).
There are prob places you can take it to, if you just want to do this one job and not have to learn how to fix it. eg if yr near Seven Sisters you could try the guys in the hardware store (buckets etc) at the front of the indoor market who can either fix things or know where to send it.Good luck. Oh and when you get the card back, destroy it. Not worth the risk. Pro cameras have two simultaneous card slots, even for fat cards that cost £100s.

Yup £20-30 sounds right. The last time I'd looked none of the free third party solutions let you actually retrieve anything. Maybe because this is one situation where people will pay up :)
Though do check independent reviews of whichever solution you use...

I've had success with https://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ and https://www.piriform.com/recuva
Both are free but ddrescue isn't that straightforward to use

Had the same problem a few months ago. Brought the card to Snappy Snaps in Holborn where a lovely guy called either Marvin or Mervyn sorted it for me. He was so helpful, brought in his laptop next day, retrieved over 1200 photos, and charged me only for the memory stuck that he saved them on. You have probably sorted it by now, but if not...
