Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
paving stones stolen from Lothair Road North this afternoon (23 July)
About four large paving stones have been dug up from the pavement on Lothair Road North, leaving a gaping and very dangerous hole. It seems clear this is not "official" but the work of thieves.
It is just near the junction with Venetia Road, outside the side garden wall of number 13 Venetia Road which is the end of terrace house. I had a chat with the lady who lives there. She said the paving stones had been removed during the afternoon today, as the pavement outside her house was intact this morning. She also showed me that the same thing had happened a little bit further up Lothair Road North, nearer the junction with Tancred Road. Quite a few paving stones had been removed there. The council and the police had been informed and a temporary repair had been done.
I have reported this to the council's pavements team. It looks like an organised gang are in action, so we need to be vigilant.

This morning I received the following email from Tony Chapman our Neighbourhood Action Team Leader:
It would seem that we have some local opportunists working in the area. Please report immediately anything you may see regarding the removal of York Stone. Myself and the NAT officer John Forde have tried looking for these people and we need your help to apprehend them.
Please do take any registration numbers of vehicles you may see, time, date etc. Please do not put yourself at risk by confronting anyone, leave that to us and the police.
Tell-Tale signs of skulduggery are; Bollards and Plastic fencing to protect passersby that are marked with various Highways contractors names. In most cases our contractor, Volker, will only use their own “badged” equipment.
This is Theft, dial 999 to report initially, then call our switch board on 020 8489 1000 to report to us. If it is the weekend, the call centre will have my mobile number and will contact me directly.

Lets hope they are replaced with something other than the cheapest of concrete slabs. The stones have prob been there for 100+ years, those Victorians invested in the future they would never see. Planting big trees, ornate ironworks, those little extra bits of trim on houses, I love them and appreciate them. Where were the budget-constrained councillors then, I bet they were all popping up saying, but we have no money for this, but they were kept in their place. Thanks, from 5 generations later, to those who overrode them.
The new paving that's part of the disappearing Tottenham gyratory has the cheapest, ugliest paving slabs imaginable. They will be there for 100 years too (unless one-ways come back into fashion again). For a zillion-£ scheme they could have splashed out just a bit, I would have noticed the difference and so would my great great great grandchildren.

I always admired these paving stones every time I walked passed, which was frequently. It's such a shame - how will they ever be replaced? I think the police could start by examining all local building works and look in people's back gardens.

So, this is what Britain has come to. The banks are stealing from us, the energy companies are stealing from us, and now people are stealing the streets. Paved with gold, no doubt! All following the lead of Maggie Thatcher, Milk Snatcher.

The concrete box broke but my utility company gave
me a new box and cover and I installer it where the top of the cover is 1/4"
above the top of the pavers. Setting up the box and cutting the pavers
around it was a PIA but looks great once its finished. Same for the sewer
drain and extension is available so you could install flush with the top of
the pavers.

These thieves may be around again. Some indications that they might be targeting the Passage York stone near SH school. If you see anyone digging up or even lifting stone in the Passage, phone the police immediately. They may be wearing 'official' looking clothes and even have cones and other paraphernalia but there is no reason for anyone to working in the Passage at the moment so report them.
