Thanks John. Hadn't heard about this previously. Whilst I'm no rail buff, it's nonetheless an interesting part of London's history.

IanVisits has put in a lot of work on that so that it's decently convincing, including some contemporaneous pictures (I recognised one of Baker St from 1863 for instance). I enjoyed it more than the Prince Harry wedding or the George Osborne fashion label launch. But the daddy of them all in newspaper terms is the Guardian San Serriffe travel section in 1977 (I thought they might have revisited it today since it was 40 years ago). Most of it, plus some later revisitings, is on the Guardian website, using the Search box.
