Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

HARRINGAY residents and transient motorists might like to view this sub-five-minute video shot this afternoon.

It's a time-lapse over 60 minutes (link below).

It features the foot of Hewitt Road from where motorists exit, but are not permitted to turn right.

Further along the street, a different camera – a Council-controlled camera – keeps an eagle eye out for unsuspecting motorists. It records the action more regularly and more determinedly than the footage you're about to see.

Watching the video:

  • Keep your eyes on the lower right of the frame: each time a vehicle turns right into Green Lanes, the figure of £180* is displayed. [*in the first of the three videos below, that should have been rendered as £130 and mentioned £65 if advantage were taken of the quick-payment deal]
  • If you watch through to the end, a summary of the hour's activities and that hour's takings is displayed.
  • Finally, there's a Star-Wars-like listing of the locations in Haringey where such cameras are located. Enjoy.

Enjoy ?!

THANKS to ROZEE's recent post, I believe we now have some reasonably hard data that should be fairly representative of the level of cash generation on this corner.

If the period referred to in ROZEE's FoI was 84 days (any advances on 84?) and the number of PCNs issued is 7,081, then the average number of PCNs issued per day was 7081/84 = 84.3 PCNs/day.

The 50%-off deal for early PCN payment is £65. There are some bound to be some other adjustments, such as delays, disputes and non-collection. However, in broad terms, this represents:

  1. Daily: 84.3 x £65 = £5,479/day
  2. Weekly: 7 x 84.3 x £65 = £38,356/week
  3. For the queried period: a total of more than £460,000
  4. At the current rate, one million pounds will come up after 182 days, or six months
  5. If we extrapolate the base figures for 12 months, the total would come to £1,992,900.

All calculation hinges on the accuracy of the figure of 7,081 PCNs issued over 84 days.

Please correct me if there's any arithmetic mistakes, or disagreement about methodology.

I apologise for the earlier mistaken figure of £180/PCN that I mentioned at the outset in good faith. However, I believe that the main point brought out in the linked-videos in this thread is (take your pick) is either: (a) the level of motoring offences that continue at this corner or (b) the level of cash generated.

Hi Everyone

I have recieved a response to my members enquiry about the number of fines issued. I was struck by the number in the FOI and was interested to see if there was any change in peoples behaviour. I have been informed that:

In response to your enquiry I can tell you that the Council has issued the following number of PCNs since May:

May (from 12th) 3087 – 154/day

June 2245 – 74/day

July 1679 – 54/day

August 908 30/day

Its a huge amount but we can see a distinct downward trend and change in behaviour. So Clive i would say your methodolgy is incorrect due to the impact fines have on a motroists subsequent behaviour. I think this is supported by the data available.
