Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

From Haringey Council:

The Ladder Roads are currently being surveyed as part of the 4yr routine maintenance programme.

This is to inform you of the removal of 7 trees within the Harringay Ward.

1. BT 62/64     Sydney Road N8 Prunus kanzan. Tree has been colonised by *Ganoderma sp. / Significant basal decay

2. OS 44 Sydney Road N8 Prunus sp. Dead Tree

3.OS 64 Hampden Road N8 Prunus cerasifera. Tree has been colonised by *Laetipporus sulphurous / Decay in stem.

4. Near Hall Frobisher Road N8 Prunus cerasifera. Tree has been colonised by *Ganoderma sp / has decay present in stem

5.  OP 84 Frobisher Road N8 Prunus kanzan. Tree has heavy decay / hollow / Tree has been colonised by *Ganoderma / Decay in stem

6.  OS 38 Frobisher Road N8 Prunus sp. Dead Tree

7. OS 8  Fairfax Road N8 Prunus cerasifera ‘nigra’. Split in trunk and stem / Crown and basal decay / decay in union and split.

*You cannot treat decay fungi once it has colonised a tree. The fungal fruiting bodies usually only appear after the trunk or branch are substantially decayed. Trees identified with fungal fruiting bodies or other major defects cannot be safely retained on the public highway where the risk of damage or injury is high. Unfortunately, in situations like this, removal is the only option. It is regrettable when mature trees have to be removed, however, the Council has a duty of care with regards to trees and must take action where hazards are evident to minimise the risk to people and property.

Prior to removing these tree, warning signs will be erected on the trees informing residents that they are to be removed.

It is the council’s normal practice to leave a tree pit vacant for 12-18 months after the removal of a tree to allow the tree matter in the soil to decay.

Subject to funding we aim to prioritise 4 different wards each year for replacement and new tree planting. The Harringay ward is next scheduled to be targeted in the 2017/18 planting season. There is a commitment within the Council Plan to plant at least 150 new trees a year and we would seek to plant some new trees in Harringay Ward as part of this commitment.

In the meantime should there be an interest from resident groups, there is tree sponsorship which a form can be downloaded from the councils web page.

In the last 11 years 266 have been planted in the Harringay Ward.

I can confirm that no trees will be felled until Councillors have had an opportunity to review and comment on this response, and we will then review our approach and communicate accordingly. Should you have comments, please send by close of business  22nd July 16

If you wish to discuss this matter further, please contact me

Kindest Regards

Have you inspected any of these tree how are they doing in your opinion ?

I haven't and I would attach little value to my opinion on this anyway. I'm sure the tree officers know what they're talking about

Any view from the residents groups? unfortunately any tree reduction isn't followed up with tree planting in tandem, ideally anticipating tree replacement. I welcome any change in policy to address this. Harringay don't have anywhere near the mature trees you see in Stroud Green, Bourgoyne Rd is the only acception, with its lovely Lime trees.

Hi Mat!

>>any tree reduction isn't followed up with tree planting in tandem

The Tree Service plant more trees than they remove. Hope you understand that, whilst some parts of our borough still have few trees, they can't guarantee to replace trees in places that have more.

>>any change in policy

They have derived a Tree Strategy over the years and I know them to be very keen to get people expressing local views, so please do dive in. If they can improve things in any way because of your input, they will. Here's the last one (2008-11) to give you an idea in case you missed it. Consultation on the one up to 2018 has closed but will open up again soon for the next period I guess. I know that they are keen for input at any time and really will change things if needed,  so do please jump in.

It's one of the few departments I've come across that seem to have covered all the bases - it's easy to take the measure of their success, after all. I've found it very hard to indicate where they've missed a trick or make constructive criticisms, even though I've tried to fault their logic and keep a wary eye out  :)

I have already sent some questions in to the council about the tree at 64 Sydney Road which is a very attractive mature cherry tree. The council tried to cut it down several years ago because its roots were displacing the pavement but residents made a fuss and the roots were treated, the pavement restored and all seemed fine again.  The other tree mentioned higher up on Sydney Road is very clearly dead and needs to be removed.
