Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

'NO' to Ending free bulky waste collections and closing the recycling centre

Haringey's current budget proposals will see the end of free bulky and green waste collections and the closure of one of the recycling centres.

These changes are likely to spell real trouble in this borough. It will inevitably lead to a significant increase in dumping with the poorest areas being hardest hit.

Research has shown that introducing a charge can lead to a drop in demand for collections of 50-75% on previous levels. Fly-tipping will increase as a result.

An alternative approach to introducing a collection charge would be to limit or reduce the number of items accepted for free, and/or the number of free collections allowed per year.

An alternative to closing the recycling centre would be to control who uses the centre and make a small charge as appropriate.

The cabinet meets to decide on this issue in two weeks' time. Whilst the consultation is now closed you can still email the cabinet member responsible (peray.ahmet@haringey.gov.uk) and copy your councillor.

The good people of Noel Park would need to do that, then.

So if Ms Kober doesn't sack her, she implicitly approves of the cuts to the refuse service, or at least doesn't care. We should vote out Kober too and then she will be free to pursue her wider political ambitions.

Is that a pig flying past my window?

"We are keen to educate before enforcing wherever appropriate". Typical delusional thinking. It's like trying to explain to a thief that stealing is bad. People commit these crimes because a) they know they can get away with it and b) they do not like or respect you. You enforce, full stop. Stop wasting tax payers money on "education". That belongs in schools and dictatorships

I'm very happy this is out in the open now.  Makes it harder for people to whitewash their incompetence through silly tweets like this. I have a question. I'd like to also write something  as recommended by the initiator of this post. What would you generally include here?

sorry let me be more clear. I mean "adult education" of course.

So how do "you enforce, full stop" without a Council official on every corner to try and catch people in the act?  It's a very blinkered approach.  I think education is an important element.  I challenge a lot of people in the street for dumping black bags on the street for example.  They often reply that they didn't realise they couldn't put waste on the street.  They see other people doing it unchallenged and follow suit.  They should know but no one actually points out to them that black bags belong in rubbish bins.

Haringey Council is just the pits and always has been and yet people keep voting for these people. We pay huge council taxes, help to reduce pollution by not owning a car, and then we are meant to put our old mattress or garden waste on our backs and carry to the tip. I think I like JJB might plan my very own Brexit soon.

Well not quite.  We are being asked to pay for bulky waste collections and put our garden waste in the ordinary bins.  As the ITV article makes clear, most London Councils already do this.  If I'm absolutely honest, I really don't think a non-Labour Council would take a significantly different approach.  Conservative/Lib Dem Councils are more likely to charge for services than Labour in my view.

Quite. It is ALL about money. I wonder where it goes in this the 5/6th largest economy in the world!
If you want to know what your council tax gets spent on, you only have to look at the published statement of accounts. All the information is there.

As far as I understand, we are not being asked to put our garden waste in the ordinary bins (although this is of course what will happen). We are being asked to pay extra for garden waste collection, or to take it to the dump ourselves (although only 40%-ish of Haringey households have access to a car). So, as usual with cuts, the poorer people in the borough are the worst affected.

I was under the impression they were suspending the garden waste collection service altogether but I'm happy to accept that I may have got that wrong. There's nothing on Haringey''s website about it which clarifies that particular point. Wherever something is charged for when it was previously free it will affect the poorest the most. Though I know some Councils waive these charges for OAPs/benefits claimants etc.which would be a good idea in my view.
