Nine Barred from Ducketts Common for Anti-social Behaviour
A group of nine men have been served Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) excluding them from Ducketts Common and other locations nearby Turnpike Lane tube after a judge agreed that they had intimidated local residents through their aggressive behaviour, foul language and illegal drug dealing.
The nIne have also been barred from associating with each other in public places anywhere in Haringey, or associating with more than one member of the group in a public place in the rest of the country.
The men were known to be noisy and aggressive, hanging out in a large group on the streets near Turnpike Lane, on Ducketts Common and in local residential estates where they would deal drugs, smoke cannabis and drink alcohol.
They would also congregate outside betting shops on Wood Green High Road - intimidating many people they encountered and damaging the appeal of local businesses.
Knives and other weapons had been found where the group frequented, as well as drugs paraphernalia, used condoms and other litter. They persistently loitered, fought, urinated, swore and spat at passers-by whilst also using foul language.
In a rare move to serve ASBOs on a large group, the judge ordered that the men no longer visit Ducketts Common or Willoughby Road N8, West Green Road N15, High Road Wood Green, Wymark Avenue, Bury Road or the Sandlings Estate in N22.

If they were able to prove all this shouldn't there be prosecutions for possessing weapons and dealing drugs too? Good news about asbos though.

They need to bring this type action down to Tottenham! This is great news and step in the right direction. Ive had enough walking through or around gangs of men congregating on the high street and in Bruce Park.

I've asked the council several questions about this.
Firstly, the term men is a bit misleading, the oldest was 20 and the youngest were minors.
Secondly, whilst I understand and appreciate how intimidating this group were to local residents, (including myself) and whilst campaigning in the area with the Labour party I heard really horrible stories of attempted street robberies, by people believed to be from this group, this has not solved the wider problem.
I notice Green Lanes was not on their ASBO list, neither was Turnpike Lane or Harringay Passage. ASBOs do not make people and their problems disappear, this is not a magic wand. It just moves them on and in some cases allows for a press release. It is also not forever, at best this is 6-12 months.
These young people are obviously lost human beings and it won't be long until another set of residents down the road start facing similar problems.
I'm really interested to know what the council has done to engage this group of young men and found the causes of their behaviour, finding solutions to their issues (whether that includes drugs; unemployment; training, mental health etc.) or whether getting such help is part of the ASBO.
To think these young people will be 25-30 in the next few years, if not helped now, then what should we expect from them later on? Even if it is prison, they'd have to commit a crime for that and one of us could be the victim.

Great to see the Council has come up with a solution caused by its short-sighted closure of so many youth centres. Maybe the next step is to ban young people from the borough altogether?
