Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I noticed this morning the shop that used to be William Hill (opposite Diyarbakir) on Green Lanes is being refitted with black frontage and lots of wooden fruit boxes being set out.

The guy working next door said it's going to be a organic grocery and juice bar. An upgrade from a bookmakers, and this end of Green Lanes definitely won't be short on grocers.

I'd argue that Yasar Halim does pretty good bread, and being an actual baker you can get it hot out the oven.

From what I've noticed they order their bread and cakes from somewhere else.

To their credit, the fruit and veg on offer is of very high quality and completely organic.

Just a shame about the prices.

It’s a nice shop and the staff have been friendly and eager to help.

Their bread is from Bread Ahead, one of London's finest bakers. The pastries are from Galeta.

I have hardly been out to the shops since the lock down began but I did walk along Green Lanes today and noticed this new shop, Mum's whole food.  I had a look round and saw that they have more types of De Cecco pasta than Sainsburys and I picked up some tagliatelli on impulse along with some fine looking grissini.

Nice, friendly shop.  They'll need a bit of luck starting up in present circs but I wish them well.

I think with everyone shopping more locally it's a very good time to open a shop!

Mum's Whole Food has an Instagram account in case anyone wants to follow them: @mumswholefood.

They have lots of vegan products too and they also receive a daily delivery of fresh vegan doughnuts (I think they were £2.50 each). I can confirm that the sourdough, whilst pricy at £3.50, is tasty.

PLEASE BOYCOTT THIS STORE!!!

Unluckily I happen to live in a flat just above the shop, and since they have opened it's been an absolute nightmare! In the back of the shop there is a little courtyard where my bedroom and living room window and the ones of some of my neighbours look into, and in that courtyard they have installed a super noisy condensing unit (for the fridge) which goes on and off constantly 24/7 - and last week to make it worse they have also put the engine of an Air Conditioning unit! You can imagine how noisy our rooms have now become, especially now that it's summer and we cannot have our windows open, and we have to live with earplugs... We have tried to reason with the people of the shop, but they have always behaved like bullies and don't want to come to any compromise - like moving those units elsewhere (INSIDE the shop, perhaps?) or trying to find a way to make them quieter at least, "because it's their right to put them wherever they want" and "if we don't like the noise, we can move out" (!) And let's not talk about the noisy works that they have also been doing in the back of the shop everyday for 4 months now - Saturdays included! (bear in mind that in all this time me and my neighbours also have been working from home and all...)

We have now involved our landlord who has advised he's contacted lawyers to see if anything can be done - and we've also asked assistance to the noise enforcement department of the council - but unfortuantely they have not been very helpful, so far...

The situation for us has got really bad because we don't feel at home in our homes anymore: our building used to be super quiet (we couldn't even hear the noise of the Green Lanes traffic) and everybody was getting along, and then they've come here behaving like they own the place, and are just pissing people off (hence this request to boycott them...)

We are not asking for them to move or else - we are just asking them to be respectful of us living there, and who are now living with those constant noises 24/7: is it too much to ask for, really?!

We really trust in your support for our cause - maybe if you do shop there, you could perhaps mention to them too - to be more considerate of the people living above the shop?

Thank you all for all the support that you might be able to give us

I’m really sorry to hear about this Serena.  There are two issues.  Firstly air conditioning in commercial premises needs planning permission.  Check with Haringey planning to see if it was applied for and permission granted.  If not planning enforcement action can be taken.  If it was approved guidelines are that it should be no more than 5 decibels above background noise.  If it is (and it certainly sounds like it from what you say) it is a statutory nuisance and must be dealt with by Haringey’s noise enforcement service.  If you’re getting nowhere with them please take it up with one of your Ward councillors

Well done, Michael: that sounds like really helpful advice.

Hi Michael

Thank you very much for your thorough reply to my post - that is indeed very useful for us: I have checked on the Haringey Online Planning Services search page, but I am not sure if the planning permission has been granted (they have applied for and been granted a couple, but no mention of air conditioning): we have indeed been complaining to the Council (the noise enforcement service you are referring to) multiple times since May about the issue we are having, and they have not come back with any feedback at all, so far?... Anyway, I didn't know about contacting our ward councillor - I will definitely do that right now.

Thanks again for your help and support!

Haringey Borough is relatively poor area so I really don’t know how sustainable their crazy unaffordable pricing can be over a long period....

£5 for a fancy loaf bread....

£8 for a melon....

Go on and on

There’s a market for everything. Consider what you are paying for when buying non-‘fancy’ bread - industrially produced garbage. I grew up eating real bread and happy to pay a premium for a decent loaf.
