Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi Everyone

Here is a photo showing the new bicycle racks that are starting to be installed as part of the Green Lanes project. The contractor is currently installing the racks in the side roads followed by Green Lanes after Christmas.

It wouldn't be hard to give them a nice coat of pink spray paint ... Still put in the wrong way though if you ask me, bikes will stick out into the pavement sometimes, like they used to happen with the last ones.

They look cheap and nasty like the ones before. What is the problem in getting proper Sheffield stands?

Aaaaand they're the SAME, only this time in stainless steel.

And they're installed at right angles. They HAVE TO BE AT 45 DEGREES OR PARALLEL.

5 seconds of googling gets you THIS;

NONE OF THESE HAVE SQUARE CORNERS. Take them out.

No, tell you what, I know nothing about bicycle racks, give me the money, I'll do a better job. WHY IS THIS SO HARD?

Attached is a photograph of perfectly good, easily visible cycle stands, taken in fading light on a cloudy afternoon. Their location? Wightman Road, about 100 meters from the ones being installed on Green Lanes

Not a fashion statement though, is it Michael?!

Apart from safety, another advantage of those generously rounded corners is that the provide a better range of angle/attack from which to attach a lock. Those concerned only with appearance or who may not have used a bicycle stand, might not appreciate that.

Ah Michael, not all councillors are familiar with Wightman Road!

Bring back beating the bounds I say

Wood Green High St has some nice looking and functional stainless steel ones;

See how they are installed at 45 degrees to the pavement edge.

This situation is depressing.

Those are seriously ugly. Is there no way getting something that both looks nice and works?
The real comedy is the angle they've been put in, it should have been 45 degree or parallel. Drunks are going to bash into the back wheel otherwise.

Would love to see what a tamden looks like locked up there.

I'm not sure if these work., but they look nice.

It is amazing how little concern there is for public urban street furniture. The arts and crafts middle classes all know the first homely rule is that nothing comes past the front door unless it's really useful or beautiful and yet the same people suddenly lose that wisdom the moment it's decisions made for the public realm. Hugely annoying.

London also has such a potential to become a massive turbine for british industry. Every piece of street furniture is an opportunity to promote Home grown talent. I bet there would have been an army of creatives in London that would have jumped at the idea of creating something really beautiful and functional at cost to promote themselves.

A city like London should never have ugly street furniture. We can't afford to. We need to be knocking it out of the park in everyway.
