Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Now that our only permitted exercise is a walk or bike ride from our house and back, many more people are making for the green spaces in the neighbourhood for walks and fresh air. I hope that, like in the last lockdown, people get time to notice seasonal changes and find some peace in the outdoors.

With this in mind, I thought I'd start a Nature Notes photography corner for anyone who ventures out with a camera (and lets face it how many of us don't have a camera with us these days) with a theme every month. This January, I'm starting with trees in Winter.

During the Winter months, trees shut themselves down in order to withstand the harshest elements. Short days and cold weather stop them growing their beautiful foliage. Moreover, frost would freeze the water within their leaves, causing sharp ice crystals to pierce and damage the delicate cell walls inside.
Though the trees themselves may be dormant, they continue to support life, offering shelter and food for many creatures during the coldest months. It is also a chance for us to appreciate their many shapes, the wonderful bark and the little buds, formed in Autumn, waiting for warmth and longer days to burst.

The idea is that people take photos of trees on their walks or in their neighbourhood that they particularly liked and share their pictures here. It is absolutely NOT a competition, the point being to help people to discover the nature in their neighbourhood and to share their findings with others.

What do you think? I'll start with a picture from the frozen lake at Finsbury Park yesterday.

and a picture of Lordship Rec Lake trees from the week before.

Both pictures were taken with a phone camera.

I like to make lakes and ponds my destination on my walks in Winter as you can do a spot of birdwatching and try and spot winter ducks like Shovelers or Pochards amongst the Mallards.

Please share your pictures in the comments below. Don't be shy!

February's theme will stick with trees but we'll concentrate on the evergreens and their winter berries.

Lovely pics Liz.

Funnily enough Liz I was just admiring the shapes of the birch canopy at the bottom of the West Slope while walking at Alexandra Palace this afternoon, so I took a picture with my phone. I then wandered up to the nearby Lime Avenue in The Grove to take another of the lime canopy.

Gorgeous pics of gorgeous trees. Top one also a very good illustration of crown (or canopy) shyness

Top one is the Lime Avenue, I knew they accommodated each other but I didn't know it was called shyness! Thanks!
