Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

All trace of the cycling cafe seems to have gone. Instead you can read about "Cycle bay provision for 226 bikes – to support the use of the nearby Cycle Superhighway to the east and reinforce the sustainable credentials of the scheme"

There's also talk of "The possibility of a new NHS centre – to provide GP Surgeries and other facilities to support Haringey’s need for local health services"

More in the attached brochure and on Haringey's planning portal.

I got a copy of their booklet through my door. I don't believe there will be a "health centre" - it's just a "sweetener" for the Council and local residents. I also don't believe the stuff about bike spaces. There's a vague statement about "appropriate car parking", which is pretty meaningless. Unless the flats etc are for people without cars, the development will make Green Lanes even more congested. As for restoring cobblestones to Colina Mews - please! - are they trying to create a hipster hangout? No mention of possible prices, but I think it is safe to assume that most local people will be unable to afford these new homes. As for all those trees - just remember what happened to the promised "pocket park" when Haringey Council took months and months to mess around with what amounted to relaying the pavements along Green Lanes. You know, the one at the junction of St Ann's and Green Lanes. What we got was an outdoor area for the Salisbury's customers.

If Paulie can't be bothered (and I'm with him) to trek over to Wightman Rd to use the current Western cycle super highway then how can they honestly expect people to travel that far east (Tottenham High Rd) to cycle along the A10's cycle superhighway?

This has been put together by a property developer who has never stepped foot in London in their life and has a healthy level of contempt for us.

I agree with Christopher too, this will all be watered down in some way; those tidbits for current residents are merely bargaining chips.

I think it looks OK. Health centre sounds good if it happens, I guess I haven't been in the area long enough to be as doubtful as everyone else.

Wondering if the cycle storage is just for residents of the new building, or if it's something that's available to everyone in the area? Would be good to have somewhere to store bikes seeing as how it doesn't seem that the ones that Hackney put on some roads will be coming to us any time soon

You can request a bike hanger for your road. There a already few in Harringay (and no doubt all around Haringey).

I put my details in here a year ago, is there a better way to request? Would love to have one

Yes, speak with your councillor and contact

Re: A Possible New NHS Facility for Haringey

The operative word here is 'Possible' - if they were serious about those plans they wouldn't use the word 'Possible'. Don't be fooled by these guys, their lawyers will have poured over this before it went to print.

Sadly true. You just stick the syllable "im" before it and you haven't broken any promises.

And, as usual, turns out it’s just not possible to provide affordable housing- “A Viability Assessment has been undertaken by DS2 which demonstrates that the proposed development cannot viably support the provision of affordable housing in line with policy”.

It sounds like the council has said the whole time that if they want to give up affordable housing then they have to provide the NHS facility.

25/05/2016: It was also noted that it was unlikely that the scheme could support any affordable housing due to the funding necessary for the NHS centre. With this in mind, it was noted that the ground floor could be a flexible use to ensure the space would be occupied should the NHS back out.

"Should the NHS back out"... Interesting

The ground floor will be another super sized Turkish restaurant or a sainsburys local. I'd be deluding myself if I Thought anything else.

It's a cynical view I know, but I just can't see any doctors surgery paying the kind of rent needed to keep the landlord happy, and with the closure of St Anne's I look forward to every new development promising new NHS facilities all over the borough - to get the massing and planning permission they want.

We could be about to see Haringey become NHS central. We may be spoilt for choice with doctors surgeries, NHS dentists and Heath centres every three hundred metres. imagine that! Who needs an A&E at North Mid.
