Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I had my mobile stolen this week.

I was standing on the corner of Stapleton Hall Road and Stroud Green Road when a moped mounted the kerb and swiped my phone from my hands.

Then about 30 seconds later they drove back past me giving me the finger!

I know this is not news these days, but it's another reminder to keep you mobiles out of sight or if you are using them look up and around whilst you do so.  Be vigilant.

I happen to have 'find my phone' on my ipad, so I could see where the feckers were driving around with my phone.  Not useful in getting it back, but I could at least tell the police where they seemed to come to a stop for a decent amount of time.  Maybe a handover before doing another circuit?

So maybe install that app on another device in case you need it as the police were definitely interested in that 'intelligence'.

If it's helpful, they were two guys on a red moped wearing helmets and with scarves covering the bottom half of their faces.

Sick of these scunters.

Nothing is actually being done about them unless it's a celebrity or it affects the tourist trade. We're still at 60 stolen bikes and peds per day. Insurers are starting to cancel policies in London. And when caught they get a little slap on the wrist.

Ban pillion passengers on mopeds.

Someone suggested that. Oddly enough it wen't nowhere and wouldn't really work. After all they are using stolen mopeds and most don't have a license.

So adding more laws for those that are already breaking them isn't much of a detterent.

But you could just pull them over before they commit crimes. The problem is you can't chase them once they're done something. See two blokes riding around pillion on a moped? Nick them. There will soon be NO NEED to have a moped in central London, electric bicycles will easily do the speed limit for even the most unfit among us and they accelerate a lot faster!

Actually you can chase them. Electric bikes that can go at the speed limit are legally classed as motorcycles and the rider must have the correct license for the power output, insurance, pay VED and have it registered with the DVSA. https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules

The title of that article says you can, the text says that they're not sure and they don't want to.

So sorry to hear this, it’s a horrible thing to happen plus the inconvenience.

Thanks for giving us the warning that they are on the loose in the area.

If you all know the IMEI number of your phone, and the feckers do not turn it off, you can immediately call your contract provider to report it stolen and they can send a kill code that kills your phone and makes it useless, so they at least do not profit from it!

That's very useful info, thank you

That kills it for UK use but a lot of these aren't just being sold on in the pub. They are being shipped abroad in bulk where they still work.

Saying that, it is still worth doing.

I recently heard about someone having their phone stolen in Tottenham.

The thieves demanded the passcode and disabled Find My Phone at knifepoint.

Shortly afterwards their Uber & deliveroo accounts were being rinsed, money was being tranferred out of paypal, anfd their Whattsap contacts were being asked for personal details!

I think these days, the handsets arent the target, it's the stuff we have on them.
