Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Whilst putting the bins out this afternoon at 2.30 - I spotted a guy today checking out my neighbours basement flat - he didn't knock on the door - just looked at the window and front door - then came back up the stairs. I looked at him and he came over to talk to me. Said he was a painter and decorator looking for work. When I asked him for his card - he said they were in his pick up. Yep - thats what I would do if I was looking for work - leave my cards in the van. He was blatently looking at the basement flats - checked our flat on purpose and read out the door number asking me if I wanted any painting and decorating - I said no. He said he'd pop round with a couple of cards in the next day or so for me to give to my neighbours - I mentioned that I'd be in. I asked him for his name - after it taking him a while to remember his name - said you can call me Bobby. He was an Irish guy, early twenties, red/brown short hair (longer and brushed forwards ontop), blue and white striped shirt and jeans and trainers. Clean shaven, thin and avg height. If you see someone like that - checking out some flats, stringing you a line about being a decorator - can you call the police? Would like to find him before someone gets broken into. I've been burgled twice in the last couple of years and it's just annoying. There's also nothing worth taking in our flat. Apparently there's a spate of break in's up Oakfield Road so perhaps they're spreading this way.

You want us to call the police - Why didn't you ?

Or asking the time.

You're being very mean to Louise. Whether or not her suspicions are justified, she's doing us a service in airing them.

There are a group of people on this site who seem to take positive delight in trying to make other users look like idiots. Maybe it's one of the answers to the question I posted a little while ago.

Yes, I find some of the responses to genuine concerns are uncalled for and often mean spirited. I'm used to some of the posters and who they are now so I know who to ignore and who might actually just have an opposing view. Debate is good, but I find some of the comments made to be low-level trolling to an extent.

I agree. I think some of the ways in which people respond to posts like these can be really off-putting for everyone. Why not think a bit first about how what you post will be perceived by others and whether you really need to be that cutting and clever? (I think one of the original responses to this post has been deleted in case you think I'm being unfair).

By the way, I notice that the original poster seems to have left HOL.

Yes they have - well done for that welcome. I'm guessing that's how you'd also respond to someone who came to raise a concern at your local residents association or knocked on your door for a bit of support. You'd then hoot with laughter and say "only kidding" afterwards too no doubt.

The internet isn't somewhere different from real life, it is part of our real life where real feelings can be hurt and real people can get fed up and leave. Stick your jokes on my posts by all means, after several years of this my hide is pretty thick, but let's leave posts where people are clearly reaching out for support and reassurance alone.

Quite right, I've tried to remove my glib aside but can't from my phone. Too late now I suppose...

but liz, by encouraging the impression that there are deadly dangers lurking round every single corner simply makes things worse.  'i saw a black man carrying a tool and he asked me the time' sort of nonsense deserves ridicule in my opinion NO ? Things like racism etc are rooted entirely in fear and social meda drip feeds fear which needs to be confronted sometimes. just saying like... .. . (if you've ever been to beverly hills you'd have witnessed the ultimate conclusion of drip fed fear)

It all depends what you want to achieve, James. I can tell you that the ridiculing approach you use rubs me up the same way to does Liz and Alison. I suspect many others react the same way. I know it makes people reluctant to post for fear of being on the end of the same treatment. Is that what you want?

Replace 'nonsense' and 'ridicule' with something less judgemental and the rest of the comment you just added begins to look like an explanation about why you object to a post. Explanations, I have more time for, but even then, it's worth thinking about whether getting into a debate is really what's called for on every occasion.

If there's a really important point in play for you, there's always the option of starting a new post.

Well said Hugh!!!

Exactly. If there's a post, there's a sarky comment from James underneath it. Achieving nothing very much.
