Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello Harringay,

A few weeks ago a good friend in the Conservatives asked me to run under their banner in the local elections and I didn't laugh right in his face.

My original excursion into politics was in 2001, when I joined the Conservatives because I was so angry about the Victoria Climbie thing but then I left them in 2005 because:

a) I got fed up of politics and

b) I got fed up of the Conservatives (mind you I was just as fed up of the other lot).

When, a few weeks ago, I was invited back to the treadmill, I wasn't any better disposed to the political life but there is so much sh*t going on in this borough that I decided I couldn't ignore it any more.  I don't fit that well into a Party mold but seeing as the Conservatives are the only group really serious about opposition in this borough and seeing as I am an Angry Old Woman, I decided that *someone* has to do something.  Don't talk to me about the LibDems. The place for nodding dogs is in the back of the car, not in the Council chamber.

*If you want to follow me on Twitter, the address is <@LoveHarringay>

*If you want to get in touch with me by phone, leave a message with Tottenham Conservatives on 020 8374 6305.  I'll get back to you.  Or email loveharringay@gmail.com.

*If you want to discuss political theory, ring the LSE.

And from now on, you can be as suspicious as you want about anything I say.

btw:

I and my two running-mates, Sean Rivers and Massimo Rossini (NB--Rivers, Rivlin & Rossini make The Three Rs, which all good Conservatives support) will be putting out a leaflet soon.

The local party have agreed to let us write up our own stuff, so we are actually going to be working hard on it, ourselves.   At least take a look when it lands on your doormat.

This Australian politician's Wikipedia page is very interesting. I'd point out that without PR he would never have been elected on his "no more pokies" ticket.

Suggests a new rainbow coalition of single issue candidates. No more pokies  (Gambling machines); no more parkies (Controlled Parking Zones); no perkies (Special Responsibility Allowances, free trips to Cannes etc ); no more porkies  (dubious statistics about policy successes); and no more pukies  (street drinkers sitting on your wall).

(Tottenham Hale ward councillor)

Would you make an exception for Pookahs?

Do you mean Cllr MacPhellimey? Grand fellow.

But you'll find he has everyone in his pocket.

Did you also see that he became disillusioned with party politics after a vote rigging scandal in his favour?

Just got my copy of the Harringay Guardian, for which many thanks. Think some typos must have crept in.
"Serving Harringay, Green Lanes, Manor House....." Manor House is in Hackney.
"The LibDems can't win here. Only the Conservatives can beat Labour". The results of the last election results in the ward are below.

ADAMOU Gina The Labour Party Candidate 2,156
ALEXANDER Karen Jane Liberal Democrats 2,244
ALLICOCK Christine Fazie The Conservative Party Candidate 435
BUNTING Rebecca Green Party 602
CAINES Tim The Conservative Party Candidate 447
CUTHBERT Matt Independent 292
FORD Chris Liberal Democrats 1,800
MULREADY Nora The Labour Party Candidate 1,974
NOBLE Stephen Michael The Conservative Party Candidate 407
SCHMITZ David Reuben. Liberal Democrats 1,987 Yes
SMITH-JEFFERYS Kerry Green Party 555
TANNER Karis Louise Green Party 368
VELLAPAH Jon The Labour Party Candidate 1,601

So Labour got 5731, LibDems 6031 and Conservatives 1289. At 1525 the Green Party actually got more votes. Sorry if the maths are one or two out, I'm doing this on the bus.

I've only got as far as the front page headline but if I spot anymore I'll let you know. Hope this is of help.

Michael, you've missed something. Lydia, like myself, is a former English Teacher. Are you now expecting us to do sums in our spare time?

Especially not Haringey Labour sums--Ambition, Distraction, Uglification and Derision.

Hello Michael,

The LibDems did well in the last elections but now they are in a bit of trouble all over Haringey as voters have discovered that the L-Ds were not, in fact, Love's Young Dream but at best ineffective.  I think something like 19 of their Councillors are standing down at this election.  They can see the way the wind is blowing.

The LibDem strapline was part of an original template and I did not write it.  Of course the LibDems could win a seat in Harringay.  So could the Greens.  The point is, so could the Conservatives.  Labour are doing such awful things, they are haemorrhaging support.

I stepped forward because the LibDems have done next to nothing with their time in power.  They did not dominate the Council but they certainly had enough weight to sway it.  Nevertheless they have done nothing to stop Labour going from bad to worse, from merely arrogant to actually despotic.

How did that happen?  My theory is central control.  A LibDem friend hooted with incredulity when I said I had been given freedom to write or say whatever I wanted.  Apparently everything the LD candidates come out with has to be pre-approved.  That sort of set-up might maintain the image of a unified party but it is no friend of creativity.

Now for the ward boundaries.  I have an official map in front of me and can assure you that Finsbury Park and part of Manor House are still in Harringay.  Unfortunately my scanner is acting up so I cannot copy it (actually that may not be permitted anyway, I should think there is crown copyright) but I shall post my own schematic of Harringay and you will see the Manor House part.

I am glad that you are reading the leaflet, though.

I shall be in Blend tomorrow morning if you or anyone else wants to discuss anything with me.

Manor House station sits in two wards, to be technical; Harringay (Haringey) and New River (Hackney). Those results are from 2010. We were using the stats from 2012 (Mayoral/GLA), so the most recent elections, where the LDs were fourth. Hope this clears things up? Justin (Agent and Chair, Conservatives)

On Thursday night, while I was out delivering leaflets, one of the residents I met recoiled from the handout I was offering, as if it were smeared with snot.

“Conservatives?” he exclaimed.  "I hate Conservatives!”
I asked him “Do you hate me?”
To which he replied, after a short hesitation, “No. But I hate everything Conservatives stand for.”

Well, with that, he had at least started to use his own brain instead of the Socialist Phrasebook.

Now, as most of you know, I am a bit miffed with a lot of the Conservative Party and what they stand for.  But I am even more miffed with what the Labour Party stands for round here.

We know what the local Labour Party stands for in the way of criticism, however oblique.

We also all know what the local Labour Party stands for in the way of voting democracy; and in regard to demolishing heritage buildings; and in regard to the preservation of green spaces; and in regard to efficient and humane social services: and in regard to protecting itself by issuing harrassment orders even to their own followers who raise inconvenient questions.

Considering the record of what the local Labour Party stands for, the Conservatives are bloody angels.

I am baffled by this post... What are you saying?

"he had at least started to use his own brain instead of the Socialist Phrasebook"

Let's not get too patronising, especially as your response is "It's all Labour's fault".

So, out of curiosity, Ms Lydia what are these things you are

A bit miffed with a lot of the Conservative Party and what they stand for

It would be great, as you are sharing you views, to expand.

PS: You still do not appear to have a declaration in your signature that you are a candidate. Why is this?
