Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

After yet another frustrating Friday stopping lorries and skip trucks (and one coach!) who hurl abuse at me, lie to me and in the case of the coach driver try to punch me, I texted my local agony aunt, the SNT cellphone number. I got a call back from Jono who left me a very long message detailing exactly what was happening on that front:

If you see a lorry using a ladder road as a cut through, please do use your super powers to get the registration number and name of the company (I realise this is hard to do but give it a shot). Send a letter to the transport manager of that company laying out the details of what happened (when, where, registration) and cc both Jono Clay-Michael at the Harringay Safer Neighbourhood team and Rob Curtis at the Haringey Council Heavy Enforcement team (why there is not just one for London I do not know). Jono will take the matter up with Rob as technically the council are responsible for the enforcement of these limits. If we can show that there is a special problem in this area (and I believe there is) then the SNT will be given executive authority to enforce them.

O'Donovan's used to be a very big problem on Lausanne Rd and I took this up on more than one occasion with their manager (big lists of visits and registrations) and he put a note in the drivers pay slips and they've been saints by comparison since. Now this was easier for me because it was the same trucks from the same firm every day but I'd really like it if we at least gave this a crack. If it proves too difficult to get registration numbers at least send the letter anyway indicating time and place.

It would be much less work if we had emails for the people involved:

This is a link to truck drivers talking about what happens to them if they break the weight limits. I really have no sympathy for them at all, they are just avoiding the traffic lights on the main routes, they all have to go under at Turnpike or over at Endymion anyway.

Max fine £1000 pounds, both the driver and the company can be fined, no points on your licence. Who would get this money? If Haringey would get it (as they are the people responsible for enforcing it) we're looking at potentially a lot of money.
I think that they are superfluous since the whole of Wightman Road is now limited to 7.5T. Not that anyone takes any notice.
If that's right, wouldn't they still need them at any Ladder Road running west (i.e up to Wightman Road)?
There are 7.5 ton except for access signs at the Turnpike Lane end of Wightman and as you turn from Endymion onto Alroy. Anyone driving on the Ladder - except for Green Lanes - is subject to the same weight and speed limits having passed one of these signs. Within a 20mph zone there is no need for repeater signs, but there are/will be roundels on the road. The bridge has a Weak Bridge sign with no exception for access. Any lorries - such as Jewson - needing access must not use the bridge but could use another road on the Ladder. What is now needed is enforcement of the weight limit - that's for Geraldo and the SNT.
I'm not sure that answers it Paul. If a Lorry comes down Green Lanes from Manor House and turns left into Effingham or Seymour or Falkland, and at the top of those, turned right onto Wightman, how would it know it was entering a restricted weight area if there's no sign at the start of the relevant Ladder Road?
All of the East to West Ladder roads ( Green lanes towards Wightman ) have 7.5 T except for access restriction signs at the entrance from Green Lanes.
A few lorries have been going up Falkand Rd between 6.00-6.30 am recently
thanks for this advice. Do you know details of their email addresses? That would make it speedier and in my experience hitting the desktop of the right person via email gets quick results. Takes less time all round.

Would be good to build up some idea of how many who and how often heavy lorries come down the ladder roads. Can anyone think of a good way to log the sitings. If we had an overview we could work together to get some action from the different authorities - council etc. Another idea would be go pick a day - get some publicity going locally and get each street ( via a rota) to log all day. Collate the info.
Ha, beat you.

I'll see how I go with the data we collected but maybe by September we'd be up for a proper big survey.
John, Might this tool provide a powerful visual utility fro gathering data about Ladder Lorry Abuse?
15.50 20/9/10, O'Donovan laden skip truck SK05 MOD came from Muswell Hill along Turnpike, turned right onto Wightman Rd and then left onto Frobisher, then a left and right to disappear along West Green Road

11.21 28/09 - loaded Parking Service tow truck WR09EWA turned off Endymion, along Alroy / Wightman right into Fairfax and then left onto Green Lanes. Average speed about 25mph in these 20mph limited roads. The car on top, N8---PJ , was bouncing around like an olympic trampolinist as the truck went over the speed bumps and the owner should be able to sue for damage to the suspension.
