I've been involved recently with thinking through a bid for some money Boris has put on the table to support outer London high streets. One of the suggestions I made was to get local artists to strut their stuff on empty shop fronts and paint in the shops we wish we had. Here are a couple of examples from Seattle:
Here's a historical version of the same thing from Vancouver:
I'm delighted to report that following this (and no doubt other conversations) I had a conversation with Rob Chau from the Harringay Traders Association this afternoon and they've got behind art as a part of Harringay's high street going forward. This has led to one immediate and some possible (dare I say probable) developments.
The immediate is that Rob is now wanting to source two or three preferably local artists to complete a couple of pieces of art during the festival itself. The idea is that both would celebrate Harringay.
One work would be a large mural done on something like a 10 x 6 panel. The panel will be made up of somewhat smaller sections so that it can be disassembled after the festival and then reassembled to decorate one of our empty shop fronts.
Rob's also keen to commission a more ephemeral piece of 3D pavement art. I thought we'd featured this idea on HoL before but I can't find it so I guess it never found its way here. I found this set of pictures to give you an idea of the sort of thing Rob wants. He also sent the picture below as an example:
Rob's found some sponsorship money to cover the artists' costs and there may even be enough to pay the artists a little.
There may also be good news on the Harringay Bridge front. Apparently, like some folk here, the traders are now keen to upgrade the banner. Whilst nothing is yet certain, Rob is also keen to talk to local artists who may be interested in a commission to design new banners for the bridge.
Up for any of this or know someone who might be? Leave a comment here or pop in to Tao Sports on Green Lanes and ask for Rob Chau. Preference will be given to local artists but the invitation is open to all. Please spread the word.

I love that bit of artwork outside the cafe. That artist did a fantastic job. Whenever I point it out to people they are amazed by it.
Yes, I will email you the image. If you wish to see the image which I uploaded to www.photoarttown.com to get extra income for the artist. You can see it by clicking this link. http://www.resimkent.com/english/detail/100.html He made a very good Job, and my aim is to give some space at the cafe to use by the local artist from September. We have one photographic exhibition ( artist in Turkey)
