Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Local stores price-gouging
Yesterday the Euro Max Market on the corner of Green Lanes and Beresford Road had doubled the price of chicken thighs from their standard £2.99 to £5.99. I didn't check to see how they are pricing loo roll, but I suspect it is similarly increased.
Any other local stores doing this?

A quick Google gave me a Budgens in Crystal Palace charging £4.00 for £2.50 toilet rolls.
As far as considering possible justifications for prices rises is concerned, there was a news report on TV yesterday which included a snippet of a market trader complaining that his wholesale prices had risen. I've no idea how accurate such complaints are, nor what the level of rise is that is being complained about. Also I couldn't find any substantial news about actual food prices rises. But there are a number reporting fears of rises and of big rises that happened in China.

If prices rise in a few weeks, I would believe it was due to wholesale prices rising or supply chain issues, but for them to double during the days that the country is engaged in panic buying seems to be a real case of "taking advantage of the moment."

The pound has really sunk this week, and the supply chain difficulties (countries blocking exports/imports etc.) are definitely pushing up wholesale prices already. Just the start I fear.

Before we go into full pitchfork and flaming torches mode against individual businesses, I don't think an anecdote of one item rising in price is evidence of price gouging. For all you know the shortages could be leading to wholesale price rises which are being passed on. Also remember that lower footfall may lead to genuine price rises because shops still have to cover their fixed costs of being open, but spread across fewer sales.

Spoke to the owner of my corner shop yesterday to ask how things were going for him, and he said they were having some difficulties in re-stocking and that the wholesaler's prices of certain items had increased massively, some by as much as 3 times. So I agree with Spiderman, it may not be down to the retailers we deal with on the high street at all. I would not want their job, now or at any other time, and I'm very glad they are there for us as part of our social fabric.

Our Trading Standards team have been made aware of a number of shops in the borough hiking up prices (profiteering) of essential items as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

I read a report on another website of a customer who wanted his usual eggs from his usual local shop. They had doubled in price and the shop keeper blamed the wholesaler. He went home and used his pre-retirement skills to trace the wholesaler. There were no prices rises from him.
