Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Local Parties dismiss voters' sense of place
Those of you who've been reading the posts on the site for a while will know that I hold strong views about our sense of place in Harringay..........well in any place really. Our sense of history's part of that, our sense of community is a part and our name is part.
Back in April 2008, Nilgun Canver offered the following:
Today Justin Hinchcliffe, Chair of the Tottenham Tories joined in on Twitter with a tweet apparently ridiculing a voter's wish to have her place of residence recognised as Harringay:
What is it with our politicians. Don't they get it. Many of us simply don't wish to have our area chopped up and repackaged to suit their notions of political entities or boundaries. We have the right to choose - not you.
Are there any other representatives from the local blues and reds who'd care to share their views on this issue? And what of the local Liberals. We've heard nothing from you on this. We'd welcome hearing what you think.

We've discussed and we have agreed to call the area Harringay Green Lanes and Too much emphasis on Harringay confuses everyone with the borough Haringey and I’m afraid it refers to the Harringay ward and excludes the Gardens and other target areas.

But do you think the inhabitants of those villas will rank themselves with those of Tottenham or Hornsey? Not likely. They are of Harringay. The guide-book was right: it is a suburb with a distinct individuality of its own.
Proud of its lineage, proud of its appearance in thirteenth-century records, it declines to surrender its identity to those who claim lordship over it. Before Tottenham and Hornsey were, Harringay was so often mentioned in ancient documents as to receive the honour of being spelt in six different ways - sure proof of importance. Indeed, the name Hornsey came into currency only through a corruption of Haringhea and Haringey; and it is therefore fit that the stout fellows of Harringay should defend the style and identity of their venerable village from the encroachments of that modern upstart Hornsey.

Sorry Tom, but I mentioned 'Tims party friends in K & C' not all the inhabitants of K & C.. Anyway, when did K & C ever have an M.P. anything but tory after 1832?
Why should the voters of Harringay, Const: Tottenham, LB Haringey.. not be allowed a local indentity when other probably more 'safe' areas are.. ?

I heard on the radio yesterday that a seagull flapping it's wings over the Atlantic can cause a hurricane somewhere else - it's amazing what a comment can do..
and BTW John D, the constiuencies of Kensington or Chelsea. before it?.. staunch Labour! come on.. you understood the point quite well..

Very true! Soon to be abolished come the election, for the record. The new seats will be called Kensington and Chelsea and Fulham.

Tom, I searched on Hol for "toff" and "champagne". I may have missed some, but the references I spotted seemed jokey and self-deprecating by the people making them. (Liz's in particular!)
Time to lighten-up, perhaps?

In defence of Tim, he's a very sweet and honourable guy. Nothing nasty or sinister about him. If every Harringay resident met him then he'd probably win hands down.
By the way, just so you don't think there's a 'Tory gang' on here - (as if!) I've never met Tom nor do I know him.

So Justin, I take this post has annoyed you.
From Day 1 when I started this site I have been accused of being "a fifth columnist for the Green Party" , "a middle class Tory stooge", a "Labour accolyte" and a "liberal party man", (and those are legit quotes).
Was this post anti-tory for example? And I'll be happy to share many other such examples. Can you to support your view?
For reference, here's an earlier discussion on this site and political neutrality.
Both Liz and I work hard to try and keep the balance.
Please point to any example of where I or the site has been anti-Tory.
Happy to have a discussion about it Justin. You were personally invited to a discussion about how the site interfaces with the local parties in the forthcoming period. The offer still stands.

No Hugh, I think Justin means me.. I'm the anti-tory and I have many reasons for that and I would have perfectly willingly explained my reasons to Justin, but he decided to block me instead.
Unlike him, both Liz and yourself have both 'advised me' when my comments have been perhaps, shall we say 'unwise'. I've always found you both to be balanced and fair. And for those that don't know - we've never met either.
@Justin I imagine you and perhaps Tom too, I don't know.. are too young to remember the 1970s & 1980s politically. Maybe you would then understand why some people will never/could never bring themselves to ever again vote tory.
And with respect, I think it is unwise to refer to a candidate as 'sweet'.. However sweet he may be.. While it may be true that he has the wow factor with Tottenham mothers, who'd just adore him as a prospective son-in-law.. I don't he'll thank you for that.

Well we must doing something right Hugh if all parties believe we are biased against them. Shows we aren't 'controlled' by local politicians or indeed bullied by them.
J, do a search on Labour and Lib Dem in the discussions and see how many of the discussions are allowed to push party lines. A recent one on David Lammy in which you were happy to participate and from which someone on the site took a screen shot to pass to Iain Dale Tory blogger, shows that when it suits, some are happy to use the material on here to make political points elsewhere.
If individual members of the site wish to declare their political allegiance there is nothing we can do and those reading their contributions can read them in the light of that declaration but without I hope stereotyping them as a result as a toff or a guardian reader.
The site, however, is politically neutral although does recognise political debate will take place on the site. Please differentiate between those who post their views and the space in which they do it. We are the virtual 'meeting place' and we welcome all who respect the legal bit
