Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Can anyone else feel/hear deep bass that seems to be coming from Finsbury Park?

Wireless is tomorrow but we already seem to have gut-shaking bass that's lasted about 30 minutes already.

So they can play music on a random Thursday at full volume to 10 pm but are then suddenly strict about curfews when people are actually paying attention? Shock horror, their care seems performative.

MOST of the problems associated with the council's hire to Festival Republic, stem from holding an event of this size in a park, never intended for mega commercial events. It would be better for all concerned if Wireless were held in a purpose-built venue.

But the council lets them have our park at a rate so cheap, FR look nowhere else.

The BBC article also mentions,

Whilst attempting to leave, we were alerted to scenes of distress at the accessible exit.

Fans could be seen and heard pleading with security to let them leave after being told they would have to be held in a restrictive space for ten minutes or until other security gave them the green light.

This led to hysteria, with fans attacking the barriers, shouting and pleading that they were disabled and needed to leave.

Hysteria, distress.... these should ring alarm bells about crowd safety but mentioned in passing. And the Council will no doubt let these issues pass without a concern.

I completely agree Clive that most of the problems are that this type of event should not be held in a local park. It should be in an event built for concerts - eg O2 or the like. It's damaging for the park and for residents who want to use it as a park. Maybe something bad happening is what it's going to take for the Council to wake up. They only seem to do something when the park is seriously damaged, like it was after the Tough Mudder events a few years ago. Lots of negative publicity and a big vocal outcry led to it being cancelled

Yes; Tough Mudder was an embarrassment, especially after national bad publicity and criticism from local MPs David Lammy and Jeremy Corbyn.

However, what the council appears to have billed as a ban or cancellation (suggestive of decisive action) may have been merely the expiry of an agreement or non-renewal of a contract.

Like a private corporation, the council is mindful of its image and reputation; the PR and spinning is non-stop.

The parent of local company and council client (Festival Republic), is Live Nation.

In the field of live music, there has never been a bigger or more greedy global monopoly. Their avarice is shown by their monopolistic practices—noted by Democrats and Republican alike—and the trend is to ever bigger events, regardless of the risks they run. They run rings round the local council, currently led by a fan of Grime.

Following the killings by crushing at AstroWorld, it was the Houston Chronicle that researched the history of deaths at gigs run by Live Nation WorldWide (c. 200 with 750 injuries).

Such is Haringey Council's satisfaction with their cultural offering, they are reluctant to acknowledge their client's history, background and reputation.

An awful track record, so many people killed at gigs, many more injured but hardly a murmur. As if it's just a normal thing to be accepted. You go to a gig, you might die.

I keep away from the park during these events as I just don’t feel safe but decided today Tuesday to risk using the parkland walk extension (the last bit leading to the bus station) and noticed that the area taken up has grown yet again, that the Council has has continued their gaslighting of the local community with expensive posters claiming that the events fund lots of things in the park - the only way I would be convinced of that tale if all the expenditure was fully and independently audited and published and finally as I walked through the opened but unsecured gate (a huge heavy piece of metal) the wind caught it and it swung shut missing me by inches.  Fortunately a council street sweeper saw the whole thing and shouted at the security guards who showed little interest.

Surely it’s time for the community take back our park and make all of it available for the large local community who have been locked out for weeks during hottest part of the year. As for safety there seems something wrong when the Council who benefits from all of this also grants the licences for them to take place.  Finally I strongly suspect that the fuss over the Sunday event ending in time is a campaign to extend the time.

THERE's a recurring pattern of a lack of interest and attention in accounting for the vast sums of public money that flow through the council.

In December, the external auditor BDO gave the worst possible Audit Opinion about council accounts, for three years running: No Opinion.

This attracted little comment or concern. When the council teetered on bankruptcy, an Emergency Financial Assistance package was provided by the Government (effectively, a huge and expensive overdraft facility).

Given the council's Major Events policy, in accounting terms our public park should have been treated as an (independent) profit centre.

And, after the Court of Appeal ruled in 2017 that all money raised in Finsbury Park must be spent in the park, the council should have started publishing separate accounts showing all income and expenditure.

Brief, sketchy and inadequate accounts have been produced only after prompting, but this is not done as a matter of course, reflecting the low priority of prudent financial management in the local authority.

The current leader has never suggested that proper accounting is a priority, but has telegraphed that the costly Borough of Culture 2027 is her major focus.

Borough of Culture - yeah like that's a major priority for the majority of residents round here

The jewel in the crown of the council empire

From December, the loyal PR council courtiers proclaimed:

Haringey sets out stall to be crowned Borough of Culture for 2027

In March, the beseeched and earnestly hoped-for coronation and ceremony did take place and council courtiers crowed.

This is now the crowning glory of the leadership but perhaps of less interest to most resident peasants.

just as well there is so much public gold rattling around in the coffers eh?

.

I usually enjoy my walk through the park but with all the barriers blocking the light and the space it's much less pleasant. Such a shame in the best months of the year when you are most likely to want to be relaxing there - especially for those without gardens. I have little faith anything will improve with the council focussed on profits over the wellbeing of residents

Agree with what you say here Simon. A full and independent audit is needed. How much comes in exactly, how much is spent and on what. I wonder if some of the dosh is spent doing repair work to the Park after the events have taken place or do Live Nation pay for the damage??

When I first lived here I used the park a lot, for running, walking, lazing around, having picnics etc. but now hardly go in there and if I wanted to at this time of year I wouldn't as it's so depressing.

Sorry you nearly got hit by that unsafe gate.
