Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I noticed this on Lynne Featherstone's website yesterday:

"The Haringey Liberal Democrats, for instance, have put together a fully-costed plan to replace Haringey’s old street lighting with new energy efficient LED street lights.

As well as reducing the Council’s electricity bills and helping the environment through lower electricity usage, the new lights will help to reduce crime and the fear of crime by making our streets brighter at night."

It may have passed me by had I not watched the BBC London News the previous evening, where I saw this report.

I applaud forward thinking in energy and cost saving, but I just hope that the relevant tests are done to ensure we don't end up with an unhappy situation if it all goes ahead.

This is in no way a political post. Just thought it interesting :)

Simon, I've now got a copy of your email to Cllr Rocky Gill of Barking & Dagenham. But not (yet) the fourth one.

Can you please email me the link to Philips' website  where they: "accepted in a piece on their own website that there may well be an issue".  I looked but couldn't find it. Thanks, again.

Alan,

I'll try again with the fourth (and most important one) plus a link to the Philips web page.

Just did a Google search for this topic - and this post popped up. Anyway! It seems that the LED lights are now being deployed.

I walked into my front room earlier this evening and noticed an eerie, blueish glow, which was lighting up most of the front of the house. I thought at first it was the artificial daylight often used on film sets, but it turned out to be the street lamps, which must have been replaced earlier today.

They are SO bright, and have the quality of floodlights. We're going to have to invest in blackout blinds, because it will be impossible to sleep with such intense light coming in all night.

Has anyone else's street been blessed with the new lighting?

We've had these for about 2 years and I really appreciate how bright the street is when cominh home in the darkness. Yes black out blinds/curtains are necessary but I had those even before the new lights. I actuall prefer the whiter light compared to the dull yello ember glow of the older lamps still in place in the streets next door.

We're in N15, and were also 'blessed' with these new LED lights just before Christmas.  I appreciate that the 'daylight effect' they create outdoors might be seen as preferable for the street environment, but they really are quite disruptive inside the house!  I think ours might be worst than most, as near a bend in the road, we have light coming in many directions.  It took me a while to figure out why I was sleeping so badly, and have now resorted to wearing an eye mask, and we will have to invest in black-out blinds eventually. A shame, as I used to really enjoy waking up to daylight whenever possible.

But a simple design adaptation should be possible, to restrict the light to the areas where it is meant to shine, or at least filter the colour of the light which enters properties, to avoid the blue hue that is so disruptive to sleep.

Does anyone know which part of the council to contact, to propose something like this, or is suffering similarly?

You can request a shroud cover - details here

Ah thanks, I hadn't found that thread..
