Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There will be a meeting to discuss the formal establishment of a Harringay Ladder Residents Association, to be held in the back room of the Langham Workingmen's club, 600 Green Lanes.

The meeting will start at 7.30pm on 16th October. You do not need to be a member of the club to attend.

The proposed order of business is :-

Discussion of the aims and objectives of the RA

Review of a proposed Constitution

Election of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.

Please RSVP on the Events notice so that we have an idea of likely numbers.

Thanks for trying John
You may be being a little premature. People don't always answer on here even if they intend going to something. However, to echo Michael, thanks for trying to organise.

Understood Liz. But I did make a point of asking people to RSVP as a gauge of likely participation.

My thanks to you and others who replied expressing interest, but who for good reasons were unable to attend, but still there weren't enough to keep the horse alive.

They don't always though (or they do and don't show up). Maybe keep the conversation going and try again next year. We discussed forming a Friends of Harringay Passage for quite a long while before we took the plunge and formed a group. Perhaps there needs to be a clearer view of what it would be for before people will commit to meetings. After all 10 people went to LCSP last month and one of them was you - maybe you can start the debate there about redefining that core group as an RA. At present it is a Neighbourhood Watch monthly meeting. (If anyone reading this isn't sure what the LCSP is or does, Sept minutes attached below)

Hi Liz. Who do I contact to get on emailing list to receive LCSP minutes? (It seems like a good idea for that to be Ladder Residents Association as well).

If you email lcsp@blueyonder.co.uk they'll add you to their mailing list Justine

I was uncertain as to how a Ladder RA would work alongside the LCSP but I've come to think it could really add value to our area having one. As Liz has said, the LCSP is a Neighbourhood Watch with emphasis on crime and planning.

An RA could develop into a group representing and encompassing the various individual RA's, Friends groups and individuals that want to be part of a group to improve our area, devoid of trader influence, politics and personal ambition. It has been said time and again how well organised the GRA is; look at their recent junction improvements and how their environment has been much improved with the dedication of the group. Surely we can do that too? The Friends of Harringay Passage have ambition to improve the junctions, but could this be better placed in a wider RA group? Should it be re-organised it into an RA in the future?

We know there are individuals in the area that are dedicated to making the Ladder a great place to live - look at the events we have had in the past year; the Lantern Parade, The Harringay Hurtle, the film night at Fairland Park. These are events that bring people together. Why don't we have more? Could an RA bring more dedicated minds together to making this an even better place to live? We all know there is much room for improvement.

Don't know how to RSVP but we are two Ladder Residents intending to come!

Sorry, but the meeting is cancelled due to lack of adequate interest.

John, there was a lot of interest in this. How many people did you want/expect initially? Like Liz said usually most people don't RSVP on HoL events, and along with that quite a few people did post here saying they were interested but couldn't make the day/time.

That is one of the main problems with using the old traditional monthly face-to-face meeting approaches for an RA. Why not try something with an online aspect to go along with the face-to-face meetings? Surely an initial draft of the aims and constitution could be done with online discussion without needing everyone to meet up somewhere to do that? Try starting a new HoL group to do that as see how many join?

Ten would have been good.

I specifically asked, on both the general post and the event notification, that people RSVP. Out of how many on the Ladder - 1000 ? only one sent a yes RSVP, one sent an email, four said they would have liked to come but couldn't make that date. To me, that doesn't add up to a lot of interest.

I have a draft Constitution ready if anyone wants to take it up.

Simon, I don't know if you already go to LCSP, but I didn't know about it before so I've just joined mailing list of Ladder Community Safety Partnership ( you just email lcsp@blueyonder.co.uk in order to get minutes and dates of meetings). I note that the next meeting is on 13th November at 7pm at Harringay United Church Hall (junction of Green Lanes and Allison Road).

Apparently the LCSP covers lots of local resident issues such as licensing, enforcement, waste collection/management, dumping, fly-tipping & graffiti, tree planting & maintenance, green spaces, traffic management, HGVs, regeneration, Harringay Passage improvements, crime, planning, the Green Lanes Festival, local markets and lots more.

I've only had a look at the minutes, but it looks like a good ladder residents association.
