The Harringay Branch Labour Party last night completed the selection of its candidates to stand in the ward in next May's Haringey Council elections. Sarah James (a.k.a Sarah Cave), a university and college dyslexia tutor and a local resident since 1993 who had been the branch chair until July, was overwhelmingly endorsed to replace Cllr Emine Ibrahim. Emine, elected in 2014, had decided not to stand again in Harringay, after being selected this time in Noel Park where she grew up and still has strong family ties. The branch had voted last week to keep two sitting councillors, Gina Adamou, first elected in 1990 and the longest serving councillor in the borough, and Zena Brabazon, who retained the seat for Labour in a byelection last year, having previously served as a councillor for neighbouring St. Ann's for a term until 2014. Gina, Zena, Emine and Sarah all oppose the controversial Haringey Development Vehicle with Zena and Emine having been prominent in developing the Council's Housing and Regeneration Scrutiny Panel's formidable critique of the grandiose scheme. The issue continued to dominate the selections across the borough with 35 of the 42 candidates selected to date (15 remain to be chosen in the next week) being opponents of Council Leader Claire Kober's proposed partnership with a giant Australian-based multinational property development corporation, Lendlease. Sarah has also been prominent locally in supporting local campaigns such as that to save the Post Office on Green Lanes from closure and was active in the Labour Remain campaign in the 2016 EU referendum vote. The candidate selections have to be formally endorsed by the party's Local Campaign Forum next month but if Gina, Zena and Sarah win in 2018 Harringay will retain the distinction of being the only ward in the borough and perhaps in London with three women councillors. Across the country still only 33% of councillors (42% of Labour councillors) are women.

Hi
How does Sarah square her support for the Remain campaign with the requisite idolatry of Jeremy Corbyn?
Also, while on the matter of Harringay coucillors, at what point did Gina Adamou switch allegiance from supporting Claire Kober to prostrate herself at the altar of Jeremy?
Secured £150,000 of funding for the re-development of Fairland Park back in 2009, which went towards the total cost of £350,000. Helped the Friends of Fairland Park see the project through, along with charity Groundwork.
I wonder how much the Effingham Mayoral Highway cost.
This will be a LOCAL election.
John my post was in reply to an attack on the Labour Left which has since disappeared so it seems out of context....
If the HDV is abandoned (can't see how it can survive) then it'll be the same type of local elections that are held everywhere, won't it? Do you agree John that people vote roughly two-thirds on national and one-third on local issues? I suppose it can sound silly to make these broad claims as to voter motivation, but I think most people labour (sorry) under a delusion as to how voters decide and would love to understand more. When I talk to local people about the HDV, I have to explain what it is - that wouldn't happen if most were engaged.
I think the majority have never heard of their local Cllr either and when sitting Cllr track record is cited, feel that whoever they elect will achieve the same so discount it. I've met a lot of people who, having actually spent time involved with their local Cllr become loyal to that person - most Cllrs I've met are worthy of that respect, at least. But those 'activists' are few and those Cllrs 'touch' are grateful, but not really in a party-political way, so don't reflect gratitude at the ballot box, do they?
However, most people cannot be bothered to get involved enough so I think they choose based on the comms 'channels' they consume. Sadly that's not HoL. Guess Facebook has some sway but the national media must be the most influential, surely, and they concentrate on national issues, obs.
So I think most people here are voting for JC - as they did for him 43 years ago when he first stood as a local Cllr here in Harringay - anyone know the number of votes he atrracted then?
My question remains, can any of this be quantified or is how people are likely to vote in local elections an unpredictable mystery?
The Evening Standard today is pretty much overlooking the HDV issue and interpreting recent selections as an organised campaign by Jeremy Corbyn/Momentum.
