Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The local Labour party are having their selection meeting on Sunday the 14th of September. Could I urge all local members to attend this meeting and help choose three good candidates and indeed put themselves forward if they can. There is a very high chance that the three people selected at this meeting will be representing us after May 2014.

I'm sure, Chris, you painted this description as a sincere and genuine portrait of what happens with councillors in Haringey. And plainly this is the impression you've formed and perhaps what you have been told by councillors.

But to be frank, after fifteen years, there's quite a lot of what you've written which I don't recognise.

I write that with some sadness. And while I don't go along with the sweeping exaggerations of Will Hoyle (Billy Hole) a former (and future?) Tory candidate, I do the best I can to describe things accurately - warts 'n' all.

"... hold huge powers of financial patronage ..."

You've lost me. There is of course a largish payroll vote which is patronage available to any Council Leader in appointing "cabinet" councillors and other vegetables. But it's not something which happens at branch shortlisting and selection meetings.

The only two meetings I attended - or was entitled to attend - were the shortlisting and selection meetings for my own Labour Party ward - Tottenham Hale. Which for the record, appeared to me to be conducted strictly in accordance with the Party Rules.

And that's not just me spouting some Party line. My party colleagues know full well that if I come across a "bent" process I will be raising it. First of course through formal Party channels. Then if needs be, as loudly as possible in public

I think this is a gratuitous, highly personal slur and you should be ashamed of yourself.

As to your defamation of charity workers, I guess you hold views that abuse entire swathes of us. Many brilliant people devote themselves to charities - it's one of the finest things anyone can do. Your nasty, inaccurate implications are probably indicative of the quality of thought you bring to bear generally - get a grip!

Start enhancing the debate rather than dragging it down - hope you can, Billy.

Every Council in the UK is in the same situation - they get paid what we collectively decide. The ones in power are forced under the system to appoint themselves to the most powerful committees. Accept your responsibility in this as a resident.

What I object to most is the direct personal attacks you make based purely on your 'opinion', which I regard not only as worthless but offensive. Leave the guy's personal life out of this - you are wrong to write what you do about him and if it was up to me I'd have you banned for writing anything personal about anyone of whatever political persuasion.

Your reaction when I raise this with you is to justify it with further personal insults - Councillors personal choices are private to them and none of our business, how many ways does that need to be said?
