I've just seen two heavily laden Jewsons lorries driving down Burgoyne Road at 750am.
I understood that these lorries weren't meant to come down the Ladder streets, due to the weight they carry, and the impact on the judder bars and houses (does anyone else's house shake when they go past?)
I recall a forum about this a while ago, but if anyone has any ideas about who to complain directly to in the Council, please let me know.
Thanks!
Yes - that's what I was thinking too. Their reliance on the 'except for access' exception seems misplaced in terms of the roadcode / Road Traffic Act. If their drivers all behaved like the courteous bloke I often see on my way to work who slows down as he goes over each of the road humps, I doubt anybody on the street would complain as they wouldn't notice. The problem is that he seems to be the exception rather than the rule. So the message for Jewsons needs to be that:
- their right to use Burgoyne / Cavendish (and other ladder roads with a weight restriction) is not as clear cut as they think it is;
- they have gotten away with it to date largely because residents have to date been too apathetic to do anything about it
- this is changing, so they need to buck up their act.
The thing is - all the Ladder roads, including Wightman, are limited to 7.5 T except for access. There is an unequivocal weight restriction on the bridge south of Burgoyne so they can't go that way. If a Jewson's lorry has to exit their site and go anywhere at all they have to use one of the 7.5T limited roads ( Burgoyne, Wightman, Cavendish etc ) and that is obviously " access " to and from the site.
As John McM said recently, honey catches more flies than vinegar so we should concentrate on persuading Jewsons to instruct their drivers to go slowly, particularly over speed cushions.
I agree - lets work with them not against them - although if they stopped going down the roads I wouldn't complain! PS please post on their facebook page so we keep up the pressure!

Another update - Jewsons are fully on board.
I just had a call from one of their managers who said that they are undertaking a full investigation into how fast their lorries go down Burgoyne Road. They are going so far as to look back at past records of lorry drivers to see whether they have exceeded the speed restrictions.
Jewsons have also contacted all of their lorry drivers and given them chapter and verse about adhering to the speed limits and making sure that they slow down for the speed humps.
As an aside they are looking into alternative routes and whether it is possible for their lorries to use e.g. Endymion and Falkland Roads.
They will be in touch with me next week to update me on the results of their investigations.
Thanks everyone for keeping up the momentum and a big thanks to Hugh for tweeting about this.
PS I also want to say how supportive Jewsons have been. They really are quite different to what I expected!
I am sure the residents of Endymion Road and Falkland Road will be thrilled.
Rebecca
You can tell your new friend at Jewsons that we definitely do NOT want their lorries being diverted down Falkland Rd as a result of your campaign to shift their lorries off your road! Thank you.
Hi guys
So sorry - I should have clarified that they were looking at alternative routes, am very happy to represent to Jewsons that those roads are residential and are not appropriate for lorries either.
The big problem for us here on Burgoyne and Cavendish is that we're on very hilly roads and there are speed humps that the lorries go over at speed. I have been trying to raise the profile of this issue with Jewsons and they are being very reasonable about investigating the problem - i'm sure they wouldn't mind if you wrote to them or sent them an email about your concerns - I have posted their details earlier on in this thread - just to be clear this isn't about me trying to pass the problem on at all - in fact quite the opposite! You would be surprised how much time this little "campaign" takes up.
Whilst I understand its normal to write short pithy posts back to people in this case i'd be grateful if you could suggest a way for me to help you too and write something more constructive so I can help you guys too.
Rebecca
Rebecca, probably the most obvious feature of Falkland Road is that it is home to a large primary school. If anyone is to have safe 'access' on Falkland it should be NHP's children, not Jewson drivers. I think Matt assumed everyone, including Jewsons, should know that.
