Jamies Italian in wood green!
Went to sainsburys local opposite morrisons near the whether spoons in wood green and overheard a conversation from two people in same 99p stores that Jamies italian is to open in wood green this summer! does anyone else have any more info
i can't wait

I think the Grand Parade is a good counter to the more commercial book ends, which is something to build on with various new independents. It was a shame when the crippling business rates and march of the chains forced independents like Nyborgs out of Muswell Hill when I lived up there. It ruins the balance and makes it like a mini Upper Street.

Pav, as far as the development plan goes, the types of uses can be defined, and it can be used to encourage independent ownership stores to open in an area but there is very little that can be done to prevent chain store ownership. A retail unit is, with some caveats, a retail unit and if it has the right permissions the person or company who owns the business cannot be defined in the plan or as a condition to the permission.
We may have a bit of a rosy view of Green Lanes being a haven for independent retail though. Do we actually know which individuals and companies own buildings and businesses on GL and how much?

Well I'm not sure about this Pav.
I have to say the last time I was a customer in a betting shop was in about 1957, when I won 6/8d on Petite Etoile with Gordon Richards up.
With my libertarian hat on, however, the betting shops wouldn't be there if they weren't profitable and they wouldn't be profitable if there weren't a demand. Who am I to say that the punter shouldn't waste his money however and wherever he likes ?
I know all the arguments about wives and children starving while the wage-earner squanders the housekeeping, but the same could be said ( and often has been said ) about pubs.
I don't think the betting-addicted spend more just because there is a betting shop on every corner: if you halve the number of bookies each of the remaining will have twice as many customers.
What really does disturb me is the proliferation of on-line betting sites and the accompanying television advertising.

They're not betting shops anymore, they are de facto casino's.
Every Ladbrokes now has a fruit machine ( called spinner ) which is £30 a go ( VIP upgrade £30 button). How they've got round the law on that one I don't know.
£30 spin the wheel, where she stops no one knows ...
It's a gambling version of selling 100% pure heron wholesale to anyone who looks over 18. It's gone bonkers.
The only meaningful limits on these machines is how much they pay out.
Whilst the arcades on Wood Green high street ( which are also casino's are open 24 hours a day ).
The council must have some control over this surely ? Gambling like all addictions serves to make the user feel empowered but like all false gods it does exactly the opposite. Sadly it preys upon the disempowered who become eventually financially destitute from a desire to satiate a normal human need.
Whilst we don't want to give the gambling industry over to the Mafia like we have done with narcotics, surely it's not a wise idea to have these places open through out the night when people are often so intoxicated they don't know what they are doing ?

To return to the initial topic - I and my companion ( shades of Michael Winner
) were wandering around Covent Garden when suddenly it seemed that a lunch-time snack was indicated.We went to the Jamies' there and had a couple of mediocre pizzas ( all base and not much topping ) and a couple of cokes or coffees. I left £40 pounds the poorer thinking that I could have put the money to better use in a betting shop ( see what I did there ? ) .
I won't be rushing to the Wood Green Jamies'.
