In the discussion on the recent incident in Mattison Road, John McMullan has been defending the safety record of the passge. Since that's not the topic of discussion over on the other thread, we're inviting people to continue the discussion here.
I'd hate to see the passage bricked up. During the day it is a much needed way of getting around Harringay safely and quickly. I use it all the time as a way of walking from one end of the ladder to another without having to encounter either the hell that is being a pedestrian on Wightman Road or the general busyness of Green Lanes. There are two schools on it, and its invaluable for them too. I must admit that my views about it have changed over the time I've lived here - I wonder whether it is something that only becomes really useful to people when they are doing lots of local things by foot?
Sure, I'd love it to be cleaner and not to be used as a toilet by dogs and the occasional human. And I'm sure that it is used as a means of getting around the neighbourhood by those who are up to no good, but I'd hate to see law abiding local people have something of convenience to them taken away as a result.
I do agree with Karen - personally I don't tend to use it at night, in very much the same way that I'd tend to walk the long way round rather than take a cut through a park.
Bob Jones thinks that dimly-lit back alleys are inherently unsafe and I might agree with him, but the passage is a series of reasonably well lit and well travelled "alleys", each one no more than 80 yards long. It is part of what makes where we live unique and wonderful. Use it or lose it, and stop encouraging others to stop using it.
Could people who find me, or even what I say, objectionable please take me up on my offer to buy them a drink or two at the next HoL drinks (probably Feb/March)? I'm not, I just push a seemingly objectionable point-of-view to get attention. Obviously.
More reason to gate the passage at dusk? (referring to a recent mugging)
Sorry, feel passionate about this as I have an interest and experience in "design out crime" and I have raised the issue of "gate or not gate" the passage before on this site as I was going to do my thesis on it. Many residents were against it, but equally many for it and I believe the police were also supportive of the dawn/ dusk idea.
With our strong community network it could be self managed, but I realise that that would still not make everyone happy. I did an Environmental Criminology analysis on drug dealing in South Kilburn and the results were interesting.
If the SNT could afford to do something similar to assess crime around the passage over the years that would be valuable and raise some debate within the community. We have had our fair share of crime in the area recently and some quite harrowing so it may not be a complete waste of resources to do such an analysis, but then maybe people prefer to have more "bobbies"?
Having worked with the police in Brent, I know that they cannot be in one area all of the time and increased police presence will not always tame opportunists, but design out crime solutions have been proved to help. I am all for blocking escape routes because that is what criminals look for. Anyway I am rambling........there is lots of research online under Situational Crime Prevention if you are interested in reading more.......geek out ;o)
