Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Is it just me or is a bunch of stuff suddenly closing on green lanes?
Am I reading too much into this or has the last two weeks produced the closure of a cluster of gems on green lanes?
- the only butchers in the area, closed
- bun & bar - best and most reasonable burger for miles, no exaggeration, closed
- badum Turkish delight/amazing spices shop, closing right now
- 2 well known places that told me they’re closing, don’t wanna name them so not to precipitate it
- jam in a jar, not closed but turned into something else a while ago, arguably worse and stripped of charm
(bit further afield is banners in Crouch End, closing too)
Is this rents/rates? What’s going on?

My husband runs a business on a high st and reported a decline in sale. On top of the above, people are holding onto their money. A recession is not looming, but upon us- just no one names it. Plus not everyone has returned to going out and high st shopping as much as before the pandemic. Whilst this is not a huge number, there are still some people shielding or suffer from long term health consequences from the pandemic.

It's worth noting that a number of businesses were kept artificially afloat during covid. So, putting aside covid impacts, those that would have closed down in normal circumstances survived a bit longer than they should have done and are now closing all at once.
On the upside, this creates opportunities for other shops. There is a new Turkish food place where Bun and Bar was, there is a new Turkish wedding dress shop and the Turkish place next to Tesco is now expanding into the Turkish barbers next door.

that sounds quite sad - do we really need another Turkish food place on Green Lanes where there used to be a great music venue? I don't think above is necessarily true about businesses being kept afloat - if COVID money was the only reason for this, they would have closed much earlier.

Dave’s newsagent appears to also have closed for good. Shame as it was the only UPS drop off point nearby. On a related note, I do find it astonishing that a Gozleme place one shop down from Baldwin’s continues operations (having recently invested in a substantial refusbishment.) This is in stark contrast with Baldwin’s who used to have trade and retail clientele, take rental income from the upstairs flat and you couldn’t spend less than £20 on a single shop there. Compare this with a Gozleme place which mainly serves a type of a £4 flatbread (which is usually consumed as a breakfast) and not much else. It’s also something that’s offered in at least 5 other shops on Green Lanes.
Read into this what you will but the resilience of some businesses on the high street (without much of a business model) is really astounding…

I've noticed that Dave's seemed to be closed for good. When the shop changed hands, it was substantially refurbed and refitted and the newspaper side of the shop was really cut down, almost just a token gesture. They went for more food which I thought was a mistake given the number of food shops in the area. At one point they started to sell fresh flowers on one counter, that didn't last long. Then coffee and croissants, again I thought that unwise given the number of cafes. That didn't last long. A few months back they were selling and offering repairs to phones, but only a few doors away from a well established phone outlet (by the bridge) I wondered if that was a good idea. Clearly none of these efforts saved the business. The lottery machine went down a long time ago so fewer people went in.
I remember the former Dave's, how busy that used to be, how you could a chat with the staff there and ask after their family. The 'old days'!

I didn't know Bun and Bar had closed, I thought it just looked like it was being refurbed when I went past recently. That's sad news.

How disappointing.
Isn't this the same place that is in what used to be the Thai place near Homebase (another sad miss)? Or have they relocated from there?

Green Lanes, all about food really. Very little else now though we do have a big wedding dress shop now. I hope the remaining shops manage to stay open.

I don’t share your disappointment as this is a class above all the Turkish on Green Lanes. And probably materially better than B&B. Pure focus on Kofte, with everything 100% home made. Down to the pepper sauce. The guy is a Kofte virtuoso and I won’t be surprise to see this recognised more widely. Do give it a try. I know I’m heading there on Friday.

Thanks for the recommendation. They don't appear to have a website yet, but they do have Facebook and Instagram profiles. This menu was posted in February. That would have been before the one at the bottom of Hewitt Road opened, but I assume it's still relevant.
