ID for voting? What do people think?

I'm totally in favour of this. It's common sense IMHO. I can't see why some folks are opposed to it. 

Every time I start a new job, open a bank or credit account or pick up a parcel I have to produce some kind of ID.  What's the big deal about showing some ID before you vote? 

I'm very in favour of ID cards too. I'm fed up of having to dig out copies of utility bills and passport copies for ID. I have to do this quite frequently for work. It's such a pain. I want to have one central thing that identifies me beyond doubt.  If they can manage this in India then ...

Gosh I'd always assumed you needed to be a London council tax payer to get a Freedom Pass.

You need to prove residency.

Documents needed for a Freedom Pass;-
1 x Proof of your name and age:
Current passport
Medical card
Birth certificate (unless your name has changed)
Current driving licence
Letter of state pension entitlement
European ID card

1 x Proof of your residential address:
Current council tax bill/letter/payment book
Current council/housing association rent book/statement/letter
Current television licence
Residential utility bill/Letter (excluding mobile phone bills) dated in the last 3 months
HM Revenue and Customs letter dated in the last 3 months
Department for Work and Pensions letter dated in the last 3 months
Occupational pension letter dated in the last 3 months

That has now changed and the system is one of individual declarations.

It's individual registration now. Hopefully you've completed an individual registration form or you won't be allowed to vote. Did you not vote in the referendum?

I would have thought that a small step in the right direction would be to require all prospective voters to present their poll card and for it to be retained at the polling station. No cost to the voter.

Actually, that's not a bad idea at all John. If you do go ahead and vote after handing over a card and have falsely confirmed that you are the person named at that address, it's pretty indisputable evidence that you have deliberately tried to vote fraudulently. Local authorities will need to get their act together when issuing cards though as there have been some screw ups. But like you say, no extra cost.

It wouldn't cost a penny to simply require people to bring their polling card which is posted to them at their home address anyway. That would seem a logical first step.
