Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

How is it possible to have utility cabinet envy?

When you've seen what Turnpike Lane Art Group have done with the ones around Langham Road, you'll understand...

So, are there any local artists out there interested in forming a Harringay (Passage) Art Group along similar lines?

I'm not an artist so couldn't lead the artistic direction of a group like that but am happy to enlist the help of the Friends of Harringay Passage group in looking at funding, permissions, talking to TAG etc about how we go about things.

Next FOHP meeting is May but you can contact me beforehand if you're interested.

If you find any could you send them down to Seven Sisters when they are finished? These are great and likewise I have no artistic ability!!

Are you volunteering FPR? There's a small one outside my house you can practice on...because as sure as eggs is eggs my "all you do is" efforts would not look as good as those done by TAG but if you're offering.

Liz. I think it is on my to do list after the last FoHP meeting to find out who to contact to make sure they are happy with us doing something similar locally.

So, if there is anyone out there who knows who did this great work please let me know- I would like to know who they spoke to re permissions (if they even did this)...

I do want ATM. He's wonderful. How much to do my front wall do you think (and not even joking)?

We will almost certainly be holding you to this FPR, we just need to do the legwork on permissions, funding and we would be more than happy to feed and water anyone who wants to do street art for us.

I think this is certainly something to put on the agenda for the next meeting.

Justin, maybe the best people to approach are the Turnpike Lane Art Group to find out more about the nitty gritty. There are some funding possibilities in the pipeline for projects.

Liz. I do not know anyone from the Turnpike Lane Art Group. If anyone can make an introduction that would be excellent.

I'm sure someone will be able to point us in the right direction.

We did this one without asking and haven't got into any trouble (yet), and when i asked to get that graffiti cleaned off it they did come and that without damaging the fish, which makes it seem like it was ok to do. I'd worry that if we try too hard to get permission we would eventually find someone who will say know.

Or someone who will say "yes"?  And let artists use these boxes as superb street "canvasses"?

I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
She cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"

Oh, and I forgot.  Some very creative art on cabinets in Amsterdam.

Ask for more.  Press for more!  Insist on more.

Sigh. Well isn't JFDI similar to insisting?

Please look at the Brisbane video (there were more when I last looked) and tell me honestly which you'd prefer?  And which you'd prefer if you were the artist and it wasn't just a nice stencil; but days planning and executing something stunning that you wanted to see retained and enjoyed by many people.

Then tell me that there's no difference.

Having both is possible too. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Unless possibly the owners of the street 'furniture' say "No" to stunning artworks because they're fed up with graffiti.

Several years ago Vancouver made a sort of 'deal' with its graffiti artists and gave them permission - and prizes - to paint on one of the city's major bridges.

How about you go off and try to get permission, if you're successful then well done and let us know, if you're not just keep it to yourself?

Keep what to myself, Ant?

The information that Virgin Media have been approached in various towns and cities and responded cooperatively?

My opinion that some lovely art has been created on what have become outdoor galleries?

The information that school students have been involved as well as local artists and seen their art enjoyed in public spaces?

I didn't know about about the Brighton Boxes until Pam Isherwood mentioned this.  But the examples I found online are here on Heart Radio website.

Plus an interview with Cassette Lord "On graffiti, art and brushes with the law".  Which incidentally, showed Virgin Media agreeing that art on their phone cabinets was far preferable to graffiti.  And they were happy to have young people on a Youth Offenders programme working with Cassete Lord from Artscape.  Something wrong with that?

Should Pam not have posted her comment but gone off and tried to get permission and kept it to herself if she hadn't succeeded?

I'm not suggesting you stop stencilling. I'm also pleased - and a bit surprised that Virgin Media weren't bothered about it.  But I really don't understand why you seem so dismissive and apparently so hostile to my comments?
