Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council is calling on residents to help deliver a Credit Union to the borough.

The council has been working with Islington and City Credit Union to create Haringey, Islington and City Credit Union – which will help protect vulnerable residents from falling prey to loan sharks, by offering affordable credit and help dealing with debt.

But to get the Union off the ground and officially recognised by the Financial Services Authority (FSA), people need to pledge to become members.

Joining the Credit Union will cost just £5, and membership is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Haringey.

All members will own a share in the company, have access to savings accounts, financial advice and good value loans – and be part of a scheme to defeat debt.

To pledge support for the Haringey, Islington and City Credit Union, visit the Credit Union page.

yep same here and will post to our members too

I see Haringey People (p19, Feb-March issue) claims that Haringey C have already launched their Credit Union. The full page ad's 'more info' slot still refers only to the rather dated page on the Council website. The phone number is still only to the 'Islington & City Credit Union' (on which, I know, Haringey CU will piggy-back) where a breathless high-speed message from someone with a gun to his head, or in a desperate rush to get to the loo, doesn't inspire much confidence in any potential saver/borrower/enquirer.

Not exactly the sort of community-friendly CU some of us had envisaged a year or two ago. Still, let's hope that Cllr Toni Mallet will soon come up with the sort of reassuring encouragement that may make a success of this CU at the local level.  Still, have a look at HP p19 - though most of the blurb is generic to any Credit Union.

Done, but what a rotten process!

Down-load a paper form, find out that it's read-only, save it with another name, ignore the instructions on the form to print it out and post it, attach it to an email, send it in. Why didn't they use pledgebank? Or couldn't they have got someone to do an online form for them?

If you're interested in a credit union, you may also be interested in time banking.
Did everyone get their invitation to join the Credit Union today?
Yes, Liz, just downloaded the forms. The format still gives the impression of existing uneasily between the real and unreal sorry, virtual worlds - not to mention the even more surreal image of floating flying-saucerly between Haringey, City and Islington. I'm guessing they'll have to change their address from www.iccu.coop to www.hiccu-p as this piggybacking attempt at a Credit Union for Haringey is just one big hiccup. As they've just recently moved their real world office to the Islington-Haringey borders at Caxton House, I don't suppose we'll ever get a real Credit Union at the heart of Haringey, not to say Harringay or even Tottenham.
