I take it the historical reference is to the late Jeremy Thorpe. Or am I missing something?

You're right, Steve. Clearly old Liberals never die, they just fade away for about forty years. Anyway, I see Liz didn't rise to my misdirection above. I was rather hoping for a somewhat delicate etymologisation of Scunthope.
A lady of my acquaintance was rather taken aback to be ejected from a chatroom for using the word "Saturday" as was I when complaining about my "niggardly " salary.
I trust that at least 90% of harringayonline content is truly adult, no?
The 'Scunthorpe problem' is quite well known (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_problem). What is more troubling here is why on earth should 'gay' be considered a dirty word?
